[ABANDONED] Dell XPS 9570: network card freezes kernel

It happened for the first time today, so it could be an issue with newest kernel (4.20.6).

So basically while browsing the internet (I'm using OpenVPN tunnel configured via NetworkManager) eventually network stop working totally, and after a while the system hangs.

At that point the system is not totally freeze, but a lot of commands will stop working (for example reboot or everything you run with sudo), and the only thing you can really do is force the power-off of the machine.

I'm getting this in the kernel log:

To me it looks like a network card driver issue, but I'm not sure how to proceed to debug this or report it. Can anyone help?

Re: [ABANDONED] Dell XPS 9570: network card freezes kernel

Can we have more of that log, some initial failure/restart is cut off, FWIW a complete

sudo journalctl -b

after issue reproduction would help (add differing values to the -b like -1 for the previous to last boot, just a complete log from the boot where the failure occured would be nice)

FWIW I have the same card/chipset and haven't had any issues. Is some power saving daemon (TLP, laptop-mode-tools or similar) active?

Sorry about that, I've amended the previous post to contain the whole log the full log is available here

To add more detail I'm not sure how to reproduce, it happened to me 2 times yesterday (morning and evening) but I've been using the machine pretty all the day... maybe is not even the NIC.

Re: [ABANDONED] Dell XPS 9570: network card freezes kernel

I'm starting to think that maybe this is not related to the NIC driver, mainly because I'm getting the warning in the kernel even when it's working fine (and if I recall correctly, they use to be there in the past and they are reported also in other laptops), so I wonder if it's an hardware fault, or a kernel bug, but honestly I don't know how to reproduce the issue and I'm not expert enough to extract the relevant information from the kernel log, assuming there's some useful information at all.

Even if it was an hardware fault I wouldn't know where to start to prove it.

The issue is similar of what described here, even though I'm not sure it's exactly the same as the kernel logs are different: https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-De … -p/6114945

Just powertop, setting the PM to "auto" for the network adapter:

$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:3b:00.0/power/control
auto

Re: [ABANDONED] Dell XPS 9570: network card freezes kernel

This looks like a monologue, however I'll share what I've found out. It seems like there are problem with ath10k driver for the Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter, that happens on suspension (reported here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1659800), they don't seem to cause big problems (sometimes the wifi won't work after resuming from wake up, but it seems like doing another sleep/wake cycle fixes the issue).

However, when the system actually crashed there were different error messages from the driver:

Re: [ABANDONED] Dell XPS 9570: network card freezes kernel

Anyone? I'm thinking about replacing the Killer card with an Intel AC 9260... the linux compatibility seems better... I also tried cabled connection but sometimes it drops and network manager seems to hang, including kernel workers problems, and system not shutting properly... I don't understand what's the problem, could it be something in the TPC/IP stack in the kernel, because it is very weird that both wifi and cable connection are giving issues.

Here's the full journalctl of that session (with the eth problem): https://gist.github.com/michelesr/e3d6a … 389ee4fe0e

I'll close this thread as I moved to the Intel AC 9260. Cheers.

Please don't use [closed], as it is used to denote a locked thread: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post

Use e.g. [abandoned] instead.
