[Solved] Upgrade package to newest version of previous release

The current branch of Samba is 4.9 with version 4.9.4 being the latest. When installing/upgrading Samba with pacman, that's the one you receive.

The stable branch 4.8. is still in active development, though, and keeps receiving updates and new releases, the latest being version 4.8.9 released today.

I understand how to install a specific package in Arch, that requires access to the package though. I also understand how to use Arch Archive in order to retrieve packages from a specific point in time. But seeing as how Arch only has one Samba package and it chooses the most current one, it is my understanding that the newer releases of the previous branch can actually never be part of Arch.

So, do I understand it correctly that the only way to get those new releases of the older branch is to compile them by oneself?

Yes, you need to compile it yourself. You can use the official PKGBUILD of the last 4.8 release as starting point.

As a matter of curiosity, why do you want samba 4.8.x? Is there some feature that is being added to an old version but not to a new version???
