[Solved] Can't connect to internet through wifi from the live boot

I first ran

systemctl stop dhcpcd@eno1.serivce

as per the wiki's instruction. I tried following the instructions in the wireless network configuration page and used wpa_supplicant with wpa_passphrase yesterday. I could connect and after starting the dhcpcd service got an ip address but while trying to ping google, although the name got resolved I had 100% packet loss. I asked on reddit and someone suggested I use wifi-menu and i tried that today but have the same problem (r/archlinux post took too long to get that single reply , so i thought i would try here. ) reddit post for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … from_live/.

Now with wifi-menu, I cant even ping local addresses it seems.

Edit: I can ping the router and myself but apparently not other local addresses nor outside addresses.

Please help!

Re: [Solved] Can't connect to internet through wifi from the live boot

I saw this post https://www.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/co … cket_loss/ and tried

curl www.google.com

and it seems to be working fine. So i guess I can continue!

Edit:Should I edit the wiki to say that ping may not necessarily work even though you might be connected to the internet for noobs like me smile?

I think normally ping should work on a physical machine when connected to the network. As I recently found out, it will not work in a VM such as QEMU because ping uses ICMP not TCP or UDP. Maybe your router simply blocks ping requests?

I agree with Morn: you can ping your router and local addresses, but you just can't ping the outside world.  Your router is doing something silly and blocking ping packets.  This is a fairly specific corner case due to unusual router configuration on your end, so it is not relevant for the general wiki page.

Hi and welcome to the club! smile

As a general rule: if you want to change something in the wiki you should bring it up in the Discussion page of the corresponding wiki article and see what other people think of it. Especially on fundamental pages like the Installation Guide.
Also it seems like in the Discussion page there is actually a post which notes that the ping section from the Installation Guide may be insufficient.

IMO the pages as they are currently are fine, if your connection does not work the Installation Guide sends you to the Network Configuration page which has steps to check for connectivity and also explains in the ping section that issues with ICMP requests may be related to the default gateway or that the target drops ICMP requests.
