As advised I created a file with the suggested option added but it would not boot at all so I deleted the file.

You created what with what?
The idea is to append "video=SVIDEO-1:d" to the kernel options, I linked that specific section of  the wiki in the other thread (and a ubuntu bug confirming the parameter to resolve the i915 issue)

Could you give me the path to the file I am to append video=SVIDEO-1:d to and is it with or without the quotes?
