i3wm - left shift doesn't work when moving to a workspace

Hi,
I'm using a UK keyboard, when I want to kill a window I can press mod+left-shift+q and it works fine. However, if I want to send a window to another workspace I have to press mod+right-shift+workspace-number.

I looked at my i3 config and I couldn't see anything obvious. I've also noticed that my keyboard layout is randomly lost even whilst using my laptop even though I run setxkbmap gb on start up.

If anyone could help me with these issue I would really appreciate it.

You can find my i3config below.

Thanks

# Font for window titles. Will also be used by the bar unless a different font
# is used in the bar {} block below.
font pango:monospace 8

# This font is widely installed, provides lots of unicode glyphs, right-to-left
# text rendering and scalability on retina/hidpi displays (thanks to pango).
#font pango:DejaVu Sans Mono 8

# Before i3 v4.8, we used to recommend this one as the default:
# font -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-120-75-75-C-70-iso10646-1
# The font above is very space-efficient, that is, it looks good, sharp and
# clear in small sizes. However, its unicode glyph coverage is limited, the old
# X core fonts rendering does not support right-to-left and this being a bitmap
# font, it doesn’t scale on retina/hidpi displays.

Re: i3wm - left shift doesn't work when moving to a workspace

Skip i3wm (or at least ensure the combo isn't grabbed by it), "startx xterm", run "xev -event keyboard" and see whether Mod4+SHIFT_L+n generates an event (pressing Mod4 and SHIFT_L perhaps will, but the last part is crucial)
Alternatively use "showkey" on a console login and/or try using Alt as $mod (the latter is inconclusive, though)

It's possible that the HW is not wired completely (partial failure of 3-key shortcuts is unfortunately common)

Re: i3wm - left shift doesn't work when moving to a workspace

Hey!
Thanks for getting back to me, it seems to work fine in xev:

KeyRelease event, serial 28, synthetic NO, window 0x600001,
    root 0xf9, subw 0x0, time 378966, (90,31), root:(92,33),
    state 0x1, keycode 50 (keysym 0xffe1, Shift_L), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
    XFilterEvent returns: False

it's really strange...

update: it seems $mod+Shift+5 and $mod+Shift+6 work but none of the others

Re: i3wm - left shift doesn't work when moving to a workspace

That's just the release of L_SHIFT - you want to ensure that the last key in the chain still generates some event.

Re: i3wm - left shift doesn't work when moving to a workspace

is this a laptop? if so, are there some sort of function keys on the number keys (excluding 5 and 6)?
