[SOLVED] Input/output error when trying to mount partition

After forced shutdown i cant mount partition.

Mount command gives me a "cant read a superblock error"

e2fsck gives me a "input/output error while trying to open /dev/sdb1"

if i use 8193 superblock with e2fsck, i get "bad magic number in superblock while trying to open /dev/sdb1"

if i uses any other alternative superblock, i get message that dev/sdb1 is clean and "error writing block 1 (input/output error)"

lsblk detects a partition. Disk is 2.5 put in cd tray adapter, partitioned in mbr/bios and has 1 partition.

Can someone help me with this? smile

Re: [SOLVED] Input/output error when trying to mount partition

Welcome to the arch linux forums davemat125.  I would suggest running a S.M.A.R.T. test if the device supports it.
Have you backed up / imaged the device before starting to attempt recovery on it?

Re: [SOLVED] Input/output error when trying to mount partition

Hi, loqs.

Disk passed short smart test.

I have a few days old backup, that contains most of the data. It would be nice to fix partition, or extract data that is not in my backup.

Thanks for helping me. smile

Please provide the commands you are using together with their full outputs.  Please also include the output of dmesg and `smartctl -a /dev/sda`

Re: [SOLVED] Input/output error when trying to mount partition

is there any easy way to at least try to extract one directory? It's not critical, but it would be nice.

Re: [SOLVED] Input/output error when trying to mount partition

I would start with https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fi … d_PhotoRec
But don't forget to read it complete from the begining with "Special notes" :-)

And don't write anything to the disk, mount it only read-only !
Better work with a copy /image if you have important data to rescue.

Re: [SOLVED] Input/output error when trying to mount partition

So i was finally able to mount the partition using some random alt superblock with read-only option. Files seem fine. Thanks for help.
