xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

I've been wanting to change my st terminal window opacity for some time now and haven't gotten it to work. I did the latest alpha patch (along with others that worked perfectly) but changing the alpha int to something lower than 0xff (currently at 0xcc) and recompiling/running xcompmgr  doesn't do anything. Even setting xcompmgr's opacity option below 1 doesn't work.

I have a hunch its my NVidia 9800 gx card or the driver. Has anyone had a similar experience on a macbook?

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

Output of "xwininfo" for an st window
when running xcompmgr, do you get shadows and fading in windows?

hanging the alpha int

Humm?
https://st.suckless.org/patches/alpha/s … 0.8.2.diff uses some float value and multiplication - which patch do you apply?

Also: what window manager? Notice that the patch excludes embedded windows from the ARGB mode.

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

I am using i3

Here's the output of xwininfo

[kevin@itunes ~]$ xcompmgr -c &
[kevin@itunes ~]$ xwininfo

xwininfo: Please select the window about which you
          would like information by clicking the
          mouse in that window.

xwininfo: Window id: 0x800006 "st"

  Absolute upper-left X:  18
  Absolute upper-left Y:  38
  Relative upper-left X:  2
  Relative upper-left Y:  2
  Width: 1244
  Height: 744
  Depth: 32
  Visual: 0x6e
  Visual Class: TrueColor
  Border width: 0
  Class: InputOutput
  Colormap: 0x800005 (not installed)
  Bit Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
  Backing Store State: NotUseful
  Save Under State: no
  Map State: IsViewable
  Override Redirect State: no
  Corners:  +18+38  -18+38  -18-18  +18-18
  -geometry 206x61+16-16

I patched using st-alpha-0.8.2.diff (the one you posted) which includes

/* bg opacity */
unsigned int alpha = 0xcc;

in the st config.h

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

I see

+/* bg opacity */
+float alpha = 0.8;

It's an ARGB window, so if compositing principally works, it should be translucent, but your values are too bug.

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

Are you saying that 0xcc is too large for the alpha value?

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

In that particular patch, certainly. Alpha is supposed to be a float < 1, last time I checked w/ my elementary teacher, 204 is slightly above 1.
Earlier version of the patch had alpha = 0xcc but significantly differ in its usage.

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

Alpha values are read as #/255 so in this case it would be 204/255 so 80% opacity. If I set it as a floating point number it throws errors when I hit make since its supposed to be reading an integer.

Also I have pywal setting all of my colors, don't think that affects anything.

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

No idea how many time I'll have to repeat that, but NOT IN THAT PARTICULAR PATCH.
Please paste your actual patched st.c

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

Sorry, the alpha is actually used in x.c - my bad.
You can also check for yourself, but if there's a line

dc.col[defaultbg].color.alpha = (unsigned short)(0xffff * alpha);

in your patched x.c, alpha is supposed to be a float < 1

Ok so it still looks like it is using the hex color code rather than an integer...

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

Because that's more like https://st.suckless.org/patches/alpha/s … e4cf1.diff - which btw. should not apply to the current git checkout of st.
Please try a clean checkout of the latest st and apply the 0.8.2 patch.

Re: xcompmgr/nouveau not allowing opacity change [SOLVED]

Yeah realized pacman installs a version of st that hasn't been updated the last 2 times. I have no clue how any of the other patches were working in the first place. I'm going to install st 0.8.2 and give it a try.

EDIT:

Ok so lesson learned, always check what version pacman is going to install on your machine.
