Setting locale in vs code terminal

I keep getting this gtk warning in vs code

 Gtk-warning: Locale not supported by C library .
            Using the fallback 'C' locale.

On running locale command from vs code terminal I get LANG set to en_us.UTF_8
but on running these commands I don't get the warning anymore.

$ unset LANG
$source /etc/profile.d/locale.sh

But when I reboot I get the same problem.
I want to know , how to make the effects of these commands persist through reboots

And what's setting that?  That was probably supposed to be en_US.UTF-8 (note the US and the hypen changes).
