Hi, all. I'm having trouble getting any display manager aside from GDM (Gnome) working. I've tried sddm, lightdm, and xdm so far. I'm tyring to use it with Plasma.
My method is generally the following. Install said display manager, enable display manager (`systemctl enable -f (light|sd|x)dm`), and add `exec startkde` to my ~/.xinitrc. I always get a black screen, sometimes with a static cursor, sometimes without.
Here are the sddm journal and syslog messages. I would really appreciate some help. I've been banging my head against this for while.
[UPDATE]:
I have updated the gist with my xinitrc, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and the output of `lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D` and dmesg

Welcome to the arch linux forums onlyanegg. What is the contents of ~/.xinitrc and ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log
lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D
dmesgOffline
Thanks, loqs. I have updated the gist with my xinitrc, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, and the output of `lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D` and dmesg. ~/.local/share/xorg does not exist on my system.

you don't need to add kdestart to xinitrc if you want use a dm, dm uses xsession and xinitrc is for xinit.
I use lightdm, after installing and enabling lightdm, check your /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.
set a minimum-vt and a greeter. I use lightdm-deepin-greeter. while you have blank screen, use CTRL+Alt+F2 and log into root and check if systemctl restart lightdm works or not.

You need to configure NVIDIA_Optimus or Bumblebee. GDM works because it uses Wayland by default.

Thanks, loqs. I finally got some time to work on this and got it working. I realize I had both the proprietary nvidia driver and the nouveau driver installed. I learned that the proprietary nvidia driver blocks the nouveau kernel module from loading (see
number 5 in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … tallation), but I'm still unsure why the proprietary driver didn't work. After switching to nouveau, sddm started successfully, but the whole computer became very slow and one CPU started locking. I added `noveau.noaccel=1` as per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/no … r_messages which fixed it.

Are you sure the X server is using the Nvidia GPU not the integrated Intel GPU when you switched from the nvidia driver to the nouveau driver?
Edit:
Specifically why you got a blank screen with the nvidia driver is https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … idia-utils and the lack of optimus or bumblebee configuration.
When you stopped using the nvidia driver the Nvidia GPU was no longer set as primary and you no longer had a blank screen.

I think it's actually using the integrated GPU, which has been working well for most things and seems to save battery.
