[solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

Hello, my VLC does not display subtitles anymore.
I tried with movies I'm sure about subtitles format because I've already seen them in original version but it's not working. Nothing is displayed, not even the movie's title at start-up.
I tried to remove the directory ~/.config/vlc. I checked that OSD and subtutiles are checked in the parameters. I tried to modify the policy and the size of characters in subtitles' options.  looked at the optional uninstalled dependancies of my VLC: nothing talks about subtitles. I launched VLC in command line but I don't see errors or warnings meaningful for my problem...
Recently, I've cleaned up a litlle my system by removing orphans bringed back the option -Qdttq of pacman and also by removing some programs manually installed with their dependancies. I dont know if it might explain something.

this is what I've got with pacman -Qi vlc:

libass is installed. I tried to reinstall libass and vlc but without effect. Concerning the polices, maybe missing, I don't know what to check.

Thank you for your help

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

Welcome to the boards. Can you post VLCs terminal output during attempted playback of something with subtitles, you said you didn't see anything relevant but maybe you are just overlooking something. Another thing to try would be to play around with the output module and maybe disable hardware decoding to see if there's something of relevance there. And if you are using wayland try on xorg.

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

Thank you V1del. I've tried the different rendering modules for the subtiles and the output modules for the video. Nothing relevant. I'm already using xorg.
This is the terminal output when launching vlc :

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

This reads like quite a lot of general brokeness here. What's that "ugly" configuration? What's your output for

pacman -Q linux
uname -a
glxinfo | grep OpenGL #Needs mesa-demos
pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs libgl
loginctl session-status
sudo journalctl -b

How are you logging in, how are you starting xorg, I'm suspecting you might have session issues on top of everything else.

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

What's  ugly is I had to remove the framebuffers from mkinitcpio.conf for a reason of compatibility with my graphic card. Worse, I installed xf86-video-ati driver rather than xf86-video-radeonhd, I don't remember why. I've got an old card Radeon HD 5xxx. And I was not able to configure DPM or DYNPM for the energy saver.
I'm using lightdm to autologin.

These are the outputs:
pacman -Q linux :

linux 4.20.8.arch1-1

uname -a :

Linux akh0001 4.20.8-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Feb 13 00:06:58 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux

glxinfo | grep OpenGL :

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 152 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 24 (X_GLXCreateNewContext)
  Value in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 37
Current serial number in output stream: 38

pacman -Qs nvidia :

local/libvdpau 1.1.1+3+ga21bf7a-1
    Nvidia VDPAU library
local/nvidia-340xx-utils 340.107-3
    NVIDIA drivers utilities

pacman -Qs libgl :

local/lib32-libglvnd 1.1.0-1
    The GL Vendor-Neutral Dispatch library
local/lib32-mesa 18.3.3-1
An open-source implementation of the OpenGL specification (32-bit)
local/libglade 2.6.4-6

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

Your graphic setup is for all intents and purposes broken. Are you sure you need that nvidia driver? What actual hardware do you have?

lspci -k

that journalctl output is heavily truncated export into a file if necessary

sudo journalctl -b > journal.txt

or use a pastebin client.

You mention a radeon card, the xf86-video-ati is the correct DDX for that that shouldn't be the problem, so you will likely want to remove nvidia-340xx-utils .

also post /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and  xorg log (from a boot after you removed nvidia-340xx-utils ).

The session output suggests you boot to LightDM , then use that to start XFCE . Is that correct ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I boot to lightDM and start XFCE, it's correct, Lone_wolf.

What do you think about? I uninstall nvidia-340xx-utils? Then I reboot and post the XOrg log?

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

Definitely yes, chances are that that would already fix your issues

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

Problem solved! The subtitles are displayed. Thank you very much.

pacman -Qs nvidia gives me:

local/libvdpau 1.1.1+3+ga21bf7a-1
    Nvidia VDPAU library

Should I also remove it?

May I rename this post, because it is not linked to vlc? Something like "confusing nvidia/radeon installation".

Re: [solved] confusing nvidia/radeon installation

You can keep that, vdpau is for certain video acceleration purposes and radeon supports it as well.

Editing the title to actually reflect the issue would be good indeed yes, while you are at it you can prepend [SOLVED] or similar to it, to indicate that the issue was resolved.
