[Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

Yesterday I updated with pacman -Syyu after several weeks - it installed ton of KDE updates

After that my icon only task manager would not launch the applications that were pinned - I switched to normal task manager and back, recreated the pinned apps and it was working.

This morning my laptop shutdown due to a dead battery (the system thinks it has 15% but it dies without warning) - after that I cant use either the Menu or the pinned launchers to start anything.
Luckily I have yakuake so I'm manually running everything from there.

When I click any application in the Application Launcher menu, it momentarily appears on the taskbar and vanishes.

I killed and launched plasmashell from a console to see if any errors show - I see this when trying to launch Dolphin from the App launcher I get

org.kde.plasmaquick: Applet "Application Launcher" loaded after 0 msec
org.kde.plasmaquick: Increasing score for "Application Launcher" to 100

What can I do?

Thanks in advance

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

Can you post the result of

sudo pacman -Qkk > pacmanQkk.log

? You might also want to run

kbuildsycoca5 --noincremental

to rebuild the loader cache. In general it is advisable to reboot (or at least relogin) on major KDE updates like this to ensure all libraries loaded are up to date.

Is this (inadvertedly) a wayland session?

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

So I managed to solve it

I backed up the .config directory, made a blank one and rebooted, I got a default desktop...
Then I copied the backed up .config into the new one and rebooted

Now all is well!

Thanks for your help

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

So it hasn't really gotten solved - It has something to do with the compositor - playing with the compositor config on the System Settings made it work, but after rebooting afain it doesn't.

I tried switching from nvidia to nouveau,  doesn't help.
This seems like some wayland related problem - how do I completely disable wayland?

That's a "console", please try the command in your yakuake.

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

I am running that in yakuake - it shows "tty"

Meanwhile, I just selected the second last version of the packages that were related to X, KDE plasma, wayland and nvidia and downgraded with pacman -U

I got a blank screen - then I did a pacman -Syyu again, it upgraded the kernel and reinstalled the latest versions of the packages once more.

After that it seems to be working  OK, even the backlight hotkeys that were not working beforee do now.
Not sure what exactly was wrong.

Will see if it continues to work

How are you starting KDE? That command should not show TTY if you are in a proper session.

That's wrong and will not properly set up your dbus session, see the second blue note in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

This is my .xinitrc

#!/bin/sh
#
# ~/.xinitrc
#
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
  for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
  done
  unset f
fi

exec startkde

#exec startfluxbox
# exec gnome-session
#exec wmaker
#exec startxfce4
#exec enlightenment_start
#exec icewm
#exec icewm-session

The following scripts exist

rep /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d  $ ls
40-libcanberra-gtk-module.sh  50-systemd-user.sh
rep /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d  $ cat 50-systemd-user.sh
#!/bin/sh

systemctl --user import-environment DISPLAY XAUTHORITY

if command -v dbus-update-activation-environment >/dev/null 2>&1; then
        dbus-update-activation-environment DISPLAY XAUTHORITY
fi
rep /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d  $ cat 40-libcanberra-gtk-module.sh
#!/bin/sh

case "${DESKTOP_SESSION-}" in
  gnome*) # Done by gnome-settings-daemon
  ;;
  *)
    # Extra check in case DESKTOP_SESSION is not set correctly
    if [ -z "${GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID-}" ]; then
      GTK_MODULES="${GTK_MODULES:+$GTK_MODULES:}canberra-gtk-module"
      export GTK_MODULES
    fi
  ;;
esac
rep /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d  $

I just rebooted again and the original problem recurred - nothing launches from the Appl launcher

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

FWIW I installed Arch in 2013 and I have migrated the same install over 3 hard disks and 2 laptops without reinstalling - so there may be a lot of barnacles so to speak - but I've never had any major issues except the non free NVIDIA driver once and wpa_supplicant not connecting another time.

This is the first time I'm having some GUI based problem

This isn't exactly a GUI issue - let's see

loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
loginctl session-status

I set up my pacman mirror list to point to : https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/201 … o/os/$arch and downgraded everything to the last day I knew it was working
It is back to normal now for sure...

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

More updates - So the problem comes and goes intermittently after rebooting.

I noticed one thing - After the screen goes blank when X loads, the system seems to be paused - nothing happens forever - if I move the mouse, the disk comes on and the KDE plasma logo appears.

If I don't wait a few seconds before moving the mouse, the problem appears. if I wait then it boots normally.

How do I see what's happening at that time?
is there a way to redirect everything that happens on the primary root terminal to a file?

I cant see anything in journalctl except a pause for the network-timesyncd service timing out once and something to do with kernel crng
Why would it wait for a mouse movement - is it waiting for entropy by any chance?

Are these two problems even related?

yes - installing haveged gets rid of the boot time pause - looks like it was an entropy issue.

The original problem remains though....

I'm trying to downgrade back to January 1st to see if it helps

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

Update: I've reverted to 01/01/2019 and its working OK

I'm too busy to worry right now, I will run a full upgrade in a few weeks

Re: [Solved] KDE Plasma 5 won't launch any apps after forced poweroff

I know this post is old, but I had the same issue and found a solution. Through try and error, I isolated the problem to the "~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc" file. In there, screenMapping was set to a value of about 1.5M characters. I don't know how this happened, but clearing that single value was enough to solve it. I'm not sure what it does, but everything seems fine and restored so far. I hope this is useful for someone in the same situation but unwilling to completely delete the config folder.

Thank you! This worked for me, running Manjaro—I appreciate you posting this even though the issue had already been solved!

How did you come to the conclusion that this was the problem?

I'm glad it was helpful! As the OP mentioned, deleting the ".config" folder fixed the issue. So basically I tried deleting files in there that seemed relevant (i.e. kde* or plasma*) until the issue was gone. That's how I found the huge appletsrc file.

Note that I had to re-login each time, so I was deleting a few at a time.

I just created an account to thank you for this. It happened to me right after installing FH5, no idea why that game breaks plasma.
