Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Yeah not sure what is going on but it makes the game kind of unplayable.

Launch Options = +r_renderAPI 1

Also did:
winetricks corefonts first, then winetricks allfonts (just to be sure I have all fonts installed)

Also went into winecfg & changed the font size in that section.

Noticed in the https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wine#Fonts Documentations had a font smoothing section with a link to a shell script to smooth out the font. Ran that script and tried every option but the game still showed up with blocky letters.

Image of what I am seeing:
https://imgur.com/a/yOmZ2rz

Not sure what else to do, I have an Intel iCore 7, 32 Gb RAM plus a nvidia graphics card which I think has 1 gb RAM in it. Kind of lost as to how to fix this. . .

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Are you playing a standalone version of the game, or running Windows Steam through Wine?

If the latter, I'd suggest using the native Steam client, and using Proton, as DOOM is a whitelisted title.

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

oh yes, Terribly sorry. Although I purchased a physical copy it still booted me to Steam. I did try running natively at first which started this who spiel. Sadly what happens when running natively it will say it is launching but then Stops? Syncs & does nothing. *shrugs* Not sure why that even happens.

Attempting Steam Wine which will launch the game. But Lags & font sucks.

~ update ~
Strange my Steam (native) is throwing this now:

vgui2_s.so missing module

I have tried all the versions of Proton to get it to work. It is running in Native now but it is running super slow (unplayable speeds) same thing as running steam via wine with the font so cannot go to the settings to turn down stuff so it can just run normal (but still perplexed because iCore 7 & 32 GB RAM should be more than enough.

I am sorry but not sure how to grep your second question on drivers I am using.

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

From lspci seems like you're using a GeForce GTX 750 Ti can you post

pacman -Qs nvidia

Doom should work flawlessly on that GPU

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Now I guess this is where it fails. At first when I read that documentation it mentioned not to install from nvidia webpage but from pacman. So I have attempted nvidia & nvidia-lt however, rebooting the screen is blank. So I have to live boot chroot Rns the package out.

After reReading I think my graphics card is too obsolete? It mentions 7 series are no longer supported :\ Does this mean I require a newer graphics card?
Also downloading the package from Nvidia site I get a .run file for linux but I thought Arch you do not have the capabilities of installing. . .

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Wiki says

3. Install the appropriate driver for your card:

For GeForce 600-900 and Quadro/Tesla/Tegra K-series cards and newer [NVE0, NV110 and NV130 family cards from around 2010-2019], install the nvidia or nvidia-lts package.

So you should be fine with the nvidia package, take a look at Nvidia Configuration
Note that the wiki says

The proprietary NVIDIA graphics card driver does not need any Xorg server configuration file. You can run a test to see if the Xorg server will function correctly without a configuration file. However, it may be required to create a configuration file (prefer /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf over /etc/X11/xorg.conf) in order to adjust various settings.

so remove any obsolete config file that may have been created in those directories that probably are causing blank screen.
Also arch does have the ability to install nvidia driver from website but it's just not recommended

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

I think this is where I am failing. ReInstalled nvidia
then made the 20-nvidia in the xorg.conf.d file with the bare minimum.
Rebooted, black screen
So live booted and mounted root tmp & var

Went to the user that had the nvidia driver .run file I downloaded off nvidia (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-401.92.run)
Running it I get:

Detected 8 CPUs online; setting concurrency level to 8.
Installing NVIDIA ddriver version 410.93

Error: The Nouveau kernel driver is currently in use by your system. This driver is incompatible with the VIDIA driver, and must be disabled before proceeding. Please consult the NVIDIA driver README and your Linux distribution's documentation for details on how to correctly disable the Nouveau kernel driver.
WARNING: One or more modprobe configuration files to disable Nouveau are already present at: /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf, /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf. Please be sure you have rebooted your system since these files were written. If you have rebooted, then Nouveau may be enabled for other reasons, such as being included in the system initial ramdisk or in your X configuration file. Please consult the NVIDIA driver README and your Linux distribution's documentation for details on how to correctly disable the Nouveau kernel driver.
Error: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/vaar/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page

Now I read in the documentation that Nouveau needs to be disabled which I thought the 2 files in the modprobe does disable it but the log states that it is not the case.

nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf on both user & etc for modprobe.d have the following

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Does not mention anything about blacklisting nouveau

~update~
edited grub after the, "quiet" added nomodeset which allowed me to execute the .run file I did a Y for all the defaults even though it said default is no

Rebooted still black screen.

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

According to the wiki

5. Reboot. The nvidia package contains a file which blacklists the nouveau module, so rebooting is necessary.

Nouveau shouldn't be a problem, if you remove

xorg.conf

you still get  black screen?Just move it somewhere else (like in your home directory) to keep it as a backup instead of removing it completely

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Tried your suggestion on just moving all xorg.conf files out, sadly same thing happened. The 20-nvidia.conf in the xorg.conf.d folder I had just the device section. Then attempted to merge what was in xorg.conf into the 20-nvidia.conf

so for section I have it as:

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Device0"
 Driver "nvidia"
 VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
 BoardName "Geforce GTX 750 Ti"
EndSection

Under "Screen" I have Device as "Device0" which I feel should know Device0 is the nvidia.

Not sure what else to do. . .

-----------------------

Good news & bad

If I edit grub to have nomodeset & then press ctrl+alt+F2 it gives me commandline if I run as root (after doing a pacman -Syuu this even stopped working)

systemctl isolate multi-user.target
modprobe -r nvidia-drm
systemctl start graphical.target

I get gnome 3 to appear and can log in as a standard user, also tested DOOM. Natively doesn't do anything but through wine it runs great! But the text is clearily pixalated.
So the problem is fixing the gui so I do not need to edit Grub2 during each boot and go through this whole spiel.

Figure this may help, ran across a few places that mentions something about nvidia_drm. - Could any of these be an issue?

lsmod | grep nvidia

nvidia_drm 53248 0
nvidia_modeset 1089536 1 nvidia_drm
nvidia 17633280 1 nvidia_modeset
ipmi_msghandler 65536 2 ipmi_devintf,nvidia
drm_kms_helper 208896 2 nvidia_drm, i915
drm 499712 5 drm_kms)helper,nvidia_drm,i915,ttm

I have no idea, i think we need someone with more experience, about the pixelated text are you using vulkan or opengl?Try switching between them i had the same problem with vulkan with my old card (GTX 660)

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Hey No worries Skunky, thank you for your advice this is a good step in the right direction.  Yeah I am pretty stuck, work around is grub after quiet adding nomodeset then repeaditly press ctrl+alt+F2 to open TTY2, I let it sit at the login for a minute then F1 to TTY1 where Gnome3 launches. Which I think the Nvidia has launched - I open NVidia X Server it appears to have loaded:

Operating System: Linux-x86_64
NVIDIA Driver Version: 418.43
GPUs: GeForce GTX 750 Ti (GPU 0)
Displays: Lenovo Group Limited LEN LI2323swA (DP-0),

Recovered GPU Errors: 0
OpenGL Renderer: GeForce GTX 750 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 (Version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 418.43)

Sadly now Steam has stopped working across the board -_-'

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Post your current xorg config and a xorg log and a dmesg, did you install all the relevant nvidia packages, specifically including lib32-nvidia-utils? Regarding fixing the GUI at boot, what is intended to be ran on startup? Console or a graphical login with GDM or something?

Re: Doom 2016 Vulkan Fonts are White Blocks

Figured out how to uninstall the bad driver and I know I installed the right one this time. Steam is launching again but still have to do the nomodeset in edit mode. The default I want it to load the GUI, I have gdm installed.
Recently I did a pacman -Syuu which in turn broke my NetGear 108.11AC NIC (rtl8821au-dkms-git-5.1.5.r74.g30fb964-1)

Perhaps this would also help: What I do when I am doing a Fresh install for setting up gnome.

pacman -S gnome gnome-tweak-tool xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm xorg-server

Then

systemctl enable gdm

That dmesg is truncated. If you are enabling modesetting on the nvidia card you have to tell GDM to start on xorg
