[Solved] Xorg black screen with archlinux-xdm

Hi,

I've been struggling with this issue since this morning, I was innocently messing around with my username, so i've changed it, along with my group name, and my home folder name, then this bug appeared. I did a whole bunch of things trying to fix this almost causing my system to break but nothing worked.

I'm using archlinux-xdm as a DM, and it starts at tty2

Now when logging through arch-xdm, I consistently get a black screen with an instance of thunar, the weird part is that some of the programs I've binded to keys, like tilda or flameshot (for screenshots) still work in this situation. And that's how i got this screen :

Black Screen

=> While arch-xdm is enabled, switching to normal console like in my tty1 and logging in, loads the x server perfectly well.

Here is where it gets very strange, and that's why I can't figure how to debug this :

When disabling arch-xdm, and enabling any other DM, i get the black screen again, and more importantly, I don't even get the normal x server when logging through console directly.

Finally when booting on console, without any DM enabled, I get the black screen again.

This tells me that it has something to do with arch-xdm but I have no idea why and where it get stuck from the logs.

However I don't think these logs are any relevant because the xserver can still load as explained above.
So unless I can find arch xdm logs or something related I don't think i might solve this any sooner.

EDIT :
Also just in case, here are some of the arch-xdm config files i've slightly modified this morning. Nothing fancy i've only changed the hex color code to black.

Re: [Solved] Xorg black screen with archlinux-xdm

Your regular session (xfce?) is probably broken and probably because its config contains fixed name paths for your $HOME
=> i'd try to symlink-restore that.
xdm and startx (assuming that's "booting on console, without any DM enabled, I get the black screen again"?) use ~/.xinitrc, other DMs rather don't.
=> post your ~/.xinitrc

Since you've a dual GPU setup (optimus?) - is "other DM" GDM? I'd say it started wayland and you tried to run an xorg session from there and that falls flat.

Re: [Solved] Xorg black screen with archlinux-xdm

Thank you sir for your quick reply, this helped me set on the right path.

I finally figured the reason of the problem was related to my xfce4 "saved state" session, and it all makes sens because it was storing values under the previous username path, since it has been changed it couldn't resolve it anymore. Which variables exactly, this I don't know, although out of curiosity, I'd like to know which file exactly store those saved states.

Solution : Settings > Session and Startup > Session > Clear saved sessions

Cool.
Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
