distro: `Linux george 4.20.6-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jan 31 08:22:01 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux`
monitor: `AOC U3277PWQU`
So, normally I set the resolution for all my display with a line in .zshrc:
`xrandr --auto --output HDMI-0 --rotate normal --mode 3840x2160 --left-of eDP-1-1`
However, whenever my monitor (not laptop) goes to sleep, said line is unable to "wake up" the monitor when I open a new terminal.
Instead, I've figured out I have to wake it up using:
`xrandr --auto --output HDMI-0 --rotate normal --mode 1920x1080 --left-of eDP-1-1`
For some reason, using a lower resolution seems to do the trick and I can than open a new terminal to set it to the correct resolution.
This is not a big hassle, but kind of annoying, I enjoyed being able to wake up my monitor using only a key-press or by opening a new terminal.
I'm using an HDMI port on both machines and I have the NVIDIA proprietary dirvers installed (with an RTX 1070)
Any ideas how I could force the monitor to wake up at the "correct" resolution ?
I know I can probably write a script that check if it's on, resets it if it isn't and add it to .zshrc... but that would feel just a tad bit too hacky, so I'd like to properly debug the issue first.

Err… what?
So your output turns off (presumingly because of DPMS? Does "not laptop" mean only the external monitor passes out?) but doesn't wake up when you move the mouse or press a key and therefore you added an unconditional xrandr setup to your zshrc to activate it by starting a VTE, but that does initally only work for FullHD resolutions, not 4k???
Please post the output of "xrandr --prop" when the ext. monitor is operating and when it's "asleep".
Also, what kind of desktop session (gnome, plasma, xfce, …) is this?
Offline
Sorry for not answering in such a long while, you are correct.
I'm not sure what DPMS means in this context. Both the monitor and laptop pass out (I believe). And yes, the laptop screen wakes up when I give some input bu the monitor doesn't.
The .zshrc xrandr line is what I always use to setup my resolution, position and rotation of my screens, since it always seemed to be the simplest way to do it (it executes instantly and does nothing if the correct resolution is already in place).
And yes, giving such a xrandr command doesn't work for 4k but it works for 1920x1080 (I assume that's what you mean by FullHD)
The output of xrandr propr is as follows (HDMI-0 is the monitor in question):
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 5760 x 2160, maximum 32767 x 32767

"xrandr --prop" when the ext. monitor is operating and when it's "asleep".

@2ManyDogs Sorry, I'm quite unfamiliar with this forum, did so
@seth, my bad, will to do once it goes to sleep again.

Here's the xrandr --prop output when the monitor is asleep (but the laptop screen is working fine):

can you wake it with
xrandr --auto --output HDMI-0 --rotate normal --mode 3840x2160 --rate 60 --left-of eDP-1-1?
The output is still fully there, but it probably just needs a kick in the butt for a renewed HDMI handshake - setting the present mode will probably not cause that.
Offline
This is the output after issuing the xrandr command at 4k resolution and waiting for 10 seconds or so.

Sorry, I'm an idiot - the 144Hz was your eDP. 60Hz is the default for the HDMI device. Try
xrandr --auto --output HDMI-0 --rotate normal --mode 3840x2160 --rate 50 --left-of eDP-1-1Offline
O.O That seems to have fixed it
Offline
Nope, nevermind, after further tests lowering the refresh rate seems not to work, I miss-lead myself ![]()

Please don't bump (just edit your post)
Also be aware that going from 50Hz to 50Hz on the next indicent would not be expected to "wake" the monitor in this case. You'd have to pick alternating rates.
(Also this will never "fix" it, just get us a better idea about the problem)
