Error: you need to load the kernel first

Everytime I update the linux kernel I'm getting this error when I try to boot:

Loading Linux linux
Error: premature end of file /vmlinuz-linux.
Loading initial ramdisk
Error: you need to load the kernel first
Press a key to continue

I checked the output of pacman -Syu and no erros were reported. Also, I checked that mkinicpio is being executed.

I found this topic (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=238904) with a similar problem, I also use windows sometimes to play games (not sure if this can be related). To solve the problem I follow the solution posted in the topic, which is booting the arch linux instalation image, mounting root and boot and execute:

 pacman -Syu systemd mkinitcpio linux

However, sometimes it doesn't work. I found out that if I mount boot, delete vmlinuz-linux and initramfs-linux and run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg it works.

Re: Error: you need to load the kernel first

Make sure that you have enough free space on your /boot and that you properly unmount and sync the partition after a kernel update (unmount the partition after an update, explicitly run sync -f /boot or properly reboot)

Re: Error: you need to load the kernel first

Check the journal for a boot w/ a failed kernel installation.
96MB is a lot for a single kernel. Do you have other kernls (lts, zen, …) installed or a parallel windows installation?

if you mean more than one windows installation, it won't differ much to one windows installation. it'll be ~23 MB.
in GPT, each windows installation has one single boot loader, and more than one windows installation just adds an entry to the BCD file that's a path to windows kernel, it just takes few more bytes, and the kernel will be in \windows\system32\.
in MBR, bootloader will be installed in system partition, not separate boot partition.

Re: Error: you need to load the kernel first

No, I mean "parallel to archlinux". In particular since windows, even a hibernating one, could then tamper w/ the storage consistency.

Re: Error: you need to load the kernel first

Check the FAT filesystem for corruption, perhaps?
