Hello, on a newly installed Arch Linux on an Acer Nitro 5 with the following specifications:
Intel® Core™ i5-8300H
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1050 Ti
Please note that Arch Linux is installed on an external USB HDD
I installed Xorg but cannot run the server using startx, it times out trying to connect to the server.
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
waiting for X server to shut down ......
xinit: X server slow to shut down, sending KILL signal
waiting for server to die ....
xinit: X server refuses to dieXorg.0.log
xorg.conf
Installed packages
I attempted to fix the issue by removing Nouveau and installing Nvidia but the problem persisted.
My goal currently is to run a Desktop Environment, I only ran X with xfce on an other system but if there is a better alternative that suits this situation please let me know, as I've spent alot of time trying to get it to work.
Thanks.

Move away /root/xorg.conf.new and read up https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

Thanks Seth for the quick and helpful reply.
I followed the Nvidia Optimus wiki page, modified xorg.conf and xinitrc and the problem was solved.
I would prefer to use the open source Nouvaeu driver but this will be my next step.
Edit: I cannot prepend the title with [SOLVED] because the title is too long.

Just shorten it ('[SOLVED] Cannot start X "waiting for X server to begin…"')

Why? The performance of that GPU with the nouvea driver will likely be similar to the onboard Intel graphics. You may as well just disable it altogether.

I try to use open source software whenever possible and probably I will not be using the system for graphically intensive applications so the integrated GPU would be enough.
There is no option in the BIOS for disabling the Nvidia as far as I can tell. so is there an other option?
Edit: I'm currently reading about this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hy … screte_GPU
