This is a screenshot of Openbox, without a session manager or such:

The autohinter is on in both. The odd thing is, with the pure Openbox desktop, the autohinter looks fine for most fonts (except the MS web fonts but that is easy to take care of). In Gnome, the autohinter causes a lot more blurring, and it makes several fonts (such as HandelGotD) much thicker than they should be, no matter what I set the hinting level to - slight, medium, full, it doesn't make a difference.
Thus, my question... How do I get Gnome to stop forcing ugly settings upon the autohinter, and let it use the default setting instead, whatever the heck that is?
(If you're wondering why I switched to Gnome, it's because good standalone multimedia players are woefully lacking. It's an issue I truly hope gets addressed at some point.)
