Different Xorg resolution at each boot

Hello everyone.

New user to Arch, loving it but I'm a bit confused on this issue.

Once every 3 boots, randomly, xorg will boot at a different resolution (lower than expected).

I searched the documentation, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this, and which log to look for; there are many and the issue seem very erratic. Also, I don't quite understand if xsession-errors says anyhing relevant.

It started happening since I added a file called /etc/libinput/local-overrides.quirks, which succesfully fixed my touchpad issues.
Can that somehow change the resolution of the screen, but only once in a while? Never had this problem before.
Typically I can reboot a couple of times until the resolution is right.

Sorry if it's a newbie question, but I am a bit at a loss here.

Best,
Aleks

Re: Different Xorg resolution at each boot

Please read the Code of Conduct: notably the How to Post section https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … ow_to_post I removed the redundant section from your thread title.

Then post Xorg logs: from a successful session, and one where the resolution is off. Also, include details, of your card, driver and how you have configured X, including the contents of the quirks file.

Re: Different Xorg resolution at each boot

My hardware is a 2017 Surface Pro.
Everything worked in terms of Xorg, but my libinput Disable Touchpad While Typing was not working because the Surface Cover Touchpad and the Surface Cover Keyboard were not recognized as internal or external. This quirks file fixes that.

/etc/libinput/local-overrides.quirks

[Microsoft Surface Type Cover Touchpad]
MatchUdevType=touchpad
MatchName=*Microsoft Surface Type Cover Touchpad
AttrKeyboardIntegration=internal

[Microsoft Surface Type Cover Keyboard]
MatchUdevType=keyboard
MatchName=*Microsoft Surface Type Cover Keyboard
AttrKeyboardIntegration=internal

However sometimes now boot becomes low-res.

As requested, this is a Xorg.log from a low resolution boot:

Re: Different Xorg resolution at each boot

The relevant lines are

[ 2.760] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1024x768@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0, position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none
...
[ 3.864] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 2736x1824@60.0 on eDP1 using pipe 0, position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none

Two things to try here, the actual reason for why it does that might be a race in the modesetting switch, in which case forcing early modesetting should help.  Regardless of that, the xf86-video-intel driver is known to have some issues on more modern chips, and it is often recommended to try running without it, as that will fall back to a generic modesetting driver which relies on kernel interfaces to implement xorg rendering, which can often be more reliable.

Re: Different Xorg resolution at each boot

Thank you!

Modifying /etc/mkinitcpio.conf to include the following line

MODULES=(i915)

did fix my issue! Problem solved for now.

I'm not sure I totally understand the rest of your reply. Wouldn't uninstalling xf86-video-intel disable hardware acceleration for my graphics card?

Also, is there a way to disable it without uninstalling it as a package with pacman?

And finally, what did my libinput quirks file have to do with modesetting? The quirks file started the problem and I still have no clue why, I would like to understand that.

Thank you again.

Re: Different Xorg resolution at each boot

It's unlikely that the addition of that file is directly involved, the kernel/udev/systemd initializes all detected devices and services at the "same" time this can sometimes lead that certain devices are initialized too soon or to late for certain things (especially on SSDs where access to configuration files/setup is fast enough that it might correlate with the initialization of a certain driver), but overall speeding up system start up. By adding i915 to the initramfs you guarantee that the graphics card driver is available before the rest of the system is being started up.

Regarding the second part, no you won't lose hardware acceleration, the xorg ddx driver is only used for xorg specific 2D acceleration (this has in any case, nothing to do with 3D or video accel, which are provided by mesa and libva-intel/intel-media-driver respectively), that can be provided via OpenGL using the generic modesetting driver, as opposed to specific code for each GPU driver. Particularly in the case of xf86-video-intel there are quite a few potential issues with the driver (of the top of my head, corrupted fonts, rendering issues in chromium) though it isn't necessarily guaranteed that you are going to run into any of these issues. Development has also been stale for a few years, though it seems to have somewhat picked up again.

That's just a general suggestion, if you don't notice any issues you can remain on xf86-video-intel, just keep that in mind if you suddenly see "weird" rendering issues.

Switching is easiest done by removing the package (should this cause problems, the package would be quickly reinstalled) you could also make e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-modesetting.conf with

Section "Device"
       Identifier "intel"
       Driver "modesetting"
       BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

which should force the use of the modesetting driver, without explicitly removing the package.
