xfdesktop seems to be broken

In a nutshell, everything was working fine this morning. I've just done a full upgrade, rebooted, and my desktop has lost wallpaper (at least) and compositing appears to be restricted to window space.

Downgrading xfdesktop has fixed it. No sign of missing dependencies.

System per my signature, and using testing.

I can usually fix stuff like this, but this is a new one on me. Any ideas, or further info required?

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Try running xfdesktop in debug mode - see if it identifies anything. Not seeing any issues here.
Note: the xfdesktop 4.13 branch is based on gkt3.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Had the same issue with xfdesktop 4.13.3-1.  Desktop icons were also becoming reset on login.  Downgraded to previous version and all is back to normal.

Similar thing. Opening desktop settings, changing things (e.g. setting which folder the wallpapers should come from), after close it reverts to the previous (default setting).

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Run xfdesktop in debug mode to see whats going on:

xfdesktop -Q && xfdesktop -e

Are you selecting an image in the new folder before closing the dialog?

Try deleting all of your existing icons.screen* files in ~/.config/xfce4/desktop. Note: xfdesktop 4.13 has a new "Icons Orientation" setting on the Icons tab in Desktop settings.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

No luck.  I deleted the entire xfce4 folder even.  Created a new gtk.css.  Reset all xfce settings to default.  My wallpaper persists though (after resetting xfce4-desktop.xml).  I'm seeing a lot of xfdesktop:645 errors in my xsession-errors log.  In host machine and VM's.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Problems with conky and xfdesktop 4.13: no transparent background (now black background).

Downgrade to 4.12: ok.

xfdesktop in debug mode didn't help.

Can you post the contents of the log file?

Not a conky user but had a look. I had to change/add the following (from default config file) to make it transparent again:

own_window_type = 'desktop',
own_window_transparent = true,
own_window_argb_visual = true,

Then why it is not in the testing repo? I'm using Xfce for its stability and reliability. Testing or AUR would be better for these 4.13 packages.

Ristretto is also affected.

I don't know - I don't manage the content of the repos.

How is it affected? What is the issue? Ristretto and xfdesktop are in no way related. Perhaps a new thread for that issue.

@toz, thank you. This helps, conky working again as expected.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Maybe some xfce update required a reset.

After changing background etc. to your likings, make sure you check the checkbox "Save sessions for future logins" when loging out of XFCE to make sure it "sticks"

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Here's the xsession-errors: "(xfdesktop:836): CRITICAL **: 05:29:08.594: xfdesktop_icon_get_allowed_drop_actions: assertion 'XFDESKTOP_IS_ICON(icon)' failed".

On VM:  "(xfdesktop:713): GLib-CRITICAL **: 05:29:08.594: g_based64_encode_step: assertion 'in !=NULL' failed"

As for the gtk.css in home folder, I just renamed it with a .bak.  I also cleared the session xfce4-session-arch:0 file and saved a new one, but nothing seems to stick.  Save Sessions on log out option doesn't work.  I should mention I have a second monitor and can't move any icons to it also in spite what I set the primary display to.

So having cleared all xfce configs and session cache files, my only workaround is to downgrade xfdesktop.  I'd be willing to bet the bug is related to the new "Icon Orientation" setting.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

i get constant flickering on the background. sometimes an old window that had been closed hours before will flicker up momentarily. some sort of graphical memory bug?

rolling back will of course resolve the issue until fixed.

i cant find related listed in bugs on https://bugs.archlinux.org/ or https://bugzilla.xfce.org/buglist.cgi?c … eldfrom=7d

This is a known bug that appears to have been fixed in glib 2.60.

I should mention I have a second monitor and can't move any icons to it also in spite what I set the primary display to.

Please file a bug report upstream.

Are you using thunar 1.8.x? It requires the thunarx api version 3 that is packaged with this version of thunar.

Sorry, I misunderstood. You mean from ristretto. Here is the active bug report for that.

Apparently we have to wait for gtk3 port of Ristretto. This is understandable, whole 4.13 series and gtk3 ports are still work in progress.

I hope the maintainer of Xfce packages reconsider about this situation. xfdesktop 4.13 is not yet ready for deployment.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

Hey toz.  Here's a pastebin link for the debug output xfdesktop debug v4.13.  And the old debug output for xfdesktop v4.12 xfdesktop debug v4.12.

I cam across this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1190990.  Perhaps a regression?

While not logged in, can you clear the contents of ~/.config/xfce4/desktop and ~/.cache/sessions and log out and back in again? You may need to position your icons one more time, then try logging out and back in again one more time.

Possibly. xfdesktop still uses grid placement for icons based on available desktop space (total screen space minus dock and panel space). I haven't personally seen this issue for a while now.

Re: xfdesktop seems to be broken

I actually booted off a live disc and deleted those files all ready.  I'll give it another shot though.

Edit:  For shits, I disabled a second monitor and all was good as per the icons getting scrambled on login.  I'll pass it along to the XFCE guys.  TY for taking the time for me toz.  I do appreciate it.
