Re: [SOLVED] Extra fonts hogging system resources

I wasn't able to test opening anything else.

Why? To get the input focus to urxvt, move the mouse into the window.

The note that says

Note: At the very least, ensure that the last if block in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is present in your ~/.xinitrc file to ensure that the scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d are sourced.

Re: [SOLVED] Extra fonts hogging system resources

When I did startx urxvt, the only application I was unable to launch d-menu to start other programs.  This is where the issue is.  Once programs such as urxvt are open, they work completely normal (at least to my knowledge), with normal cpu usage.  However, only during the launch process does the program slowdown and hog the CPU.

-rw------- 1 root root 102 Mar 14 17:33 /home/four/.Xauthority
-rw------- 2 four users 0 Mar 14 17:51 /home/four/.Xauthority-c
-rw------- 2 four users 0 Mar 14 17:51 /home/four/.Xauthority-l

My .xinitrc file is the same as the default file, with startx added to the end.  Can I remove the xterm lines?  I don't think I have xterm installed anyways.

Your exec i3 line will never run. Nothing after "exec xterm ..." will run. Comment out (or remove) all of the twm and xterm lines, leaving only "exec i3" and the rest of the stuff at the beginning.

Okay, fixed it. Now i3 won't start at all. Running startx causes a black screen.

Okay. I'm gonna temporarily revert to the previous version of my .xinitrc just so I can copy and paste the log.

You can also use a pastebin client:  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … in_clients

If you restart X, make sure you get the correct log.

Perfect, thanks a lot. I kept the same .xinitrc and the error said this is the log.

Re: [SOLVED] Extra fonts hogging system resources

Your X11 server runs very fine for 40ms and then terminates cleanly because your xinitrc is fundamentally broken and actually NOT the default one + adds.

twm &
xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 &
exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login & # the script ends here, is replaced by an xterm and that forks so xinit continues and stops the X11 server
exec i3

Don't randomly put "&" to any line…

Ensure

which i3
which xterm # pacman -Syu xterm

and replace that fragment w/

xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
exec i3

This will get you one xterm and i3, assuming both are installed (from your "only black screen" I assume you're getting X11, no xterm and an unconfigured i3, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/I3)

Alright. Well, I deleted .Xauthority before starting x, since I kept getting errors about the file being unreadable. i3 started correctly like this.  As for your test, I changed .xinitrc and it started both xterm and i3.  Xterm starts immediately, then after some delay, i3 launches behind xterm.  So it seems my .xinitrc file is fixed now, but still suffering from whatever is causing everything to take forever to launch.  Also, I just looked at neofetch, and the GPU is specified as my 1050ti card.  Screenfetch shows only 'intel'.

Re: [SOLVED] Extra fonts hogging system resources

Yeah, back to base #1.
Skip i3, just "startx xterm" or "startx urxvt"
Start other processes from there (not dmenu or whatever) - you should be able to move the pointer into the terminal window and run another "urxvt" to check whether that start's fast.
Stuff like

urxvt -geometry +300+300

should allow you to keep the windows somewhat apart w/o a WM.

Did you delete all xauthority files?

Yes I deleted the xauthority files, but .Xauthority was recreated.

Re: [SOLVED] Extra fonts hogging system resources

I think I may have found what is going wrong.  Based on these errors, for some reason, my system is trying to utilize my GPU, while it is in power state D3 (which I'm pretty sure means its off).  After running startx urxvt and trying to launch another urxvt, these errors were in dmesg.

No, DISPLAY should certainly be ":0" as it is.
I had hoped from some DRI_PRIME

Why is this "XDG_SESSION_TYPE=tty"?

loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID

Ceterum censeo: please drop OMZ (ensure it's not source by your shell in any way or kind) and try again.

Can just removing

source $ZSH/oh-my-zsh.sh

in .zshrc take care of it?  It is not referenced anywhere else in .zshrc.

Re: [SOLVED] Extra fonts hogging system resources

If it's not invoked indirectly by some other sourced file/script (or referenced in your zprofile) that should do.

Edit: you can also just "chsh -s /bin/bash"
