[SOLVED] xrandr not working with multiple monitors

Hello,

I'm running Arch on a laptop.
When I try to switch to an external monitor with

xrandr --output HDMI1 --primary --mode 2560x1440 --pos 0x0 --output VIRTUAL1 --off --output eDP1 --off

the video output doesn't get displayed correctly (I will try to include screenshots of this).

However when I run this command from my .xinitrc the output gets displayed correctly.

I was using this method to switch monitors a few days ago (I don't remember exactly, probably no more than a week) and it was working fine.
I tested this in different window managers and the result was always the same. Using both monitors at the same time also does not work.

Is this maybe related to the new kernel update? I haven't tried downgrading yet because I'm afraid I might break even more because of incompatibilities.

I have a builtin intel video card, driver is
xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+863+g6afed33b-1 (from pacman -Qs output)
Kernel: linux 5.0.1.arch1-1
lspci | grep VGA outputs

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Celeron N3350/Pentium N4200/Atom E3900 Series Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)

xrandr -q output:

Edit:
I tried downgrading the kernel to version 4.20 via

# pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux/linux-4.20.13.arch1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

but the problem was still there.

I also tried resetting all my packages to the 5.3.2019 by setting

Server = https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2019/03/05/$repo/os/$arch

in my /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, but this throws an error:

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: installing xorg-mkfontscale (1.1.3-1) breaks dependency 'xorg-mkfontdir' required by xorg-font-utils

I could only go back to the 8.3.2019 which didn't help.

Are there any other ways I can get my system to an earlier state?
I looked at Downgrading Packages and Arch_Linux_Archive#How_to_downgrade_one_package and thats is all I found.

Re: [SOLVED] xrandr not working with multiple monitors

How do I post thumbnails? The code of conduct said I should post links to the images.

Re: [SOLVED] xrandr not working with multiple monitors

Links or thumbs are fine, just not oversized images.

Links or thumbs are fine, just not oversized images.

Fixed it, didn't know I could link to the original image with the thumbnail image... I'm sorry big_smile

Could you move this back into Kernel and Hardware? I don't think this Problem belongs in the Newbie Corner (even though I'm new to the forum)

We'll need more information. Card/driver (versions), and xorg.log, etc.

I added the xorg log and driver info.
If there's some info I forgot please let me know.

Re: [SOLVED] xrandr not working with multiple monitors

Neither the xrandr -q output nor the Xorg log suggest the command was run before dumping them.
From the problem description (works on xinit) and the screenshot It would seem the xrandr change is actually fine (please dump "xrandr -q" under the "broken" condition) and the problem is w/ either your WM or compositor not catching the geometry change (and thus eg. not updating glViewport() for a GL compositor)

=> in doubt post

loginctl session-status

(no matter when, I want to see the process list)

I ran the xrandr -q/copied the log after I switched back to the laptop screen because I couldn't read my terminal.

Disabling compton did the trick, thanks for the suggestion!
I had switched to a tryones compton fork for blurred transparency. Now I feel stupid for not thinking about this... Using the official version works.

Thank you!
