Whole system is terribly slow with kernel 5.0.X

Hi there, I've been experiencing some issues since I moved from 4.20.x to 5.0.x. I saw that other people are having slow boots, that's my case too except for the big load times for all the programs once I login and start the x server. I'm talking of a couple of seconds everytime I run a program and a couple of minutes to completely load firefox.

So far I've been waiting and tried 5.0, 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 hoping that every new update would fix it, but that's never the case and the only thing that makes everything go smooth again is downgrading to 4.20.13

To be honest, I still don't have much experience identifying problems in logs, I hope someone can help me with this.

uname -a: Linux archlinux 5.0.2-arch1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Mar 14 18:47:49 UTC 2019 x86_64 GNU/Linux

dmesg: http://ix.io/1ycM

journalctl -b: http://ix.io/1ycL

systemd-analyze blame: http://ix.io/1ycN

The boot time maybe isn't that bad but in comparison to 4.20 kernel is pretty slow. One thing I noticed too is that during the boot with 5.0.x it hangs for a few seconds with a fsck check, this doesn't happen with the 4.20 kernel.

Thank you for your time.

Welcome to the boards

Nothing springs out at me in those (other than maybe

intel_powerclamp: No package C-state available

what does your CPU frequency look like during this, does it not ramp up?), can you try to install and run strace on an affected command?

Re: Whole system is terribly slow with kernel 5.0.X

Hi!

I have very similar issues for a couple days now and tried to find out the actual problem.
There have been a couple of topics, but they don't seem to be directly related like the lmv Issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=244699
I am not 100% convinced that it is not related for me, but turning of lvm_metad did nothing for me.

for me the boot looks even worse:

systemd-analyze blame:

    1min 23.818s initrd-switch-root.service
         46.795s systemd-journal-flush.service
         30.065s docker.service
         28.822s dev-mapper-vg01\x2droot.device
         23.050s systemd-udev-settle.service
         18.827s ldconfig.service
         12.129s systemd-fsck-root.service
...

It completely kills the speed on my root partition:

dd bs=1M count=128 if=/dev/zero of=test oflag=dsync

^C [...]

67+0 records in
67+0 records out
70254592 bytes (70 MB, 67 MiB) copied, 885,397 s, 79,3 kB/s

I am now on the same machine with only switching to the lts kernel 4.19.29-1-lts and i get

dd bs=1M count=128 if=/dev/zero of=test oflag=dsync
128+0 records in
128+0 records out
134217728 bytes (134 MB, 128 MiB) copied, 2,23943 s, 59,9 MB/s

I also have the boot comparison from 4.20.13-arch1-1-ARCH http://ix.io/1DFc and 5.0.1-arch1-1-ARCH http://ix.io/1DFd

Maybe you can check if your Issue also relates to the io speed, for me CPU and mem seem to work fine.

And if it is really unrelated i'll move my Post to a different topic smile
