[SOLVED] Mutter 3.32 Upgrade Breaks Budgie Desktop

I just upgrade my system only to be greeted to a wonderfully unresponsive desktop with a black bar at the bottom. I managed to track down the issue to being mutter 3.32 as reverting it back to 3.30 allows my system to work fine (my gtk.css configuration doesn't work, but I can figure that out later).

Has anyone else experienced this? I didn't manage to find any particularly damning reports in my system log when I was running the upgraded package, so I wanted to see if it's just related to Mutter or if something more sinister is happening with my system. Turns out I didn't look hard enough. Here's a paste of some of my log where it reports multiple issues with budgie and gnome.

Re: [SOLVED] Mutter 3.32 Upgrade Breaks Budgie Desktop

I have the same problem and didn't know where to start. Happy to see you found the cause. Maybe we should report this to budgie on github?

Hi, you need to rebuild budgie with updated patches https://github.com/solus-project/budgie … /pull/1591

That's enough "me too" posting -- it's not up for a vote.

I am using Budgie desktop. Yesterday, (March, 16) I have upgraded my Arch desktop.
I've experienced multiple GUI problems:
- Change of fonts in the terminal
- Reversed scrolling direction!
- Alt+Tab; Super key not working
- Windows not able to change focus
- No transparency
- Multiple minor graphics glitches, etc.

The previous full system upgrade was on February, 03. Therefore, taking into account the problem
with terminal fonts, I suspected it was due to one of the two package changes
(xorg-mkfontdir -> extra/xorg-mkfontscale or libsystemd with core/systemd-libs).

As I have seen from your post, it was not the case. I have downgraded `mutter` to 3.30.2:

sudo pacman -U https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/m/mutter/mutter-3.30.2-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

That fixed all the problems.

Thank you so much for your post, it saved me a lot of time and energy!

I'm not sure if it's the recommended method, but instead of just downgrading Mutter, I switched my pacman.conf to use the Arch Linux Archive by following these instructions.

My system was completely working until at least as late as 2019/03/10, but you may be able to find a later date too. I'll keep it that way until the budgie-desktop package is updated.

No worries. I knew I had to share it after I spent an hour and a half reinstalling packages one by one to see if any caused an issue. Glad it helped.

I tried first to restore the system's state to February, 3, as in the documentation you referenced. But since during the last upgrade there were some renamings (xorg-mkfontdir -> extra/xorg-mkfontscale, libsystemd with core/systemd-libs, and one other), this method failed with a message "installing xorg-mkfontscale (1.1.3-1) breaks dependency 'xorg-mkfontdir' required by xorg-font-utils".

In the end, it was much easier to downgrade a single package.

EDIT:

This last package update budgie-desktop-10.4+123+gf2dbc215-2 fixes all the problems.

Yep. It fixed the issue for me too. Although now gnome-terminal ignores my custom gtk.css sadly. I'll go ahead and mark the thread as solved despite my current disappointment.
