After a reboot, the default blue mouse XFCE4 background is displayed (although I didn't chose that) and trying to change it in the setting or third party application has no effect.
Any ideas?

Can you start xfdesktop in debug mode:
xfdesktop -Q && xfdesktop -e > /tmp/xf.log 2>&1and try to change the wallpaper using the desktop settings module (xfdesktop-settings)?
Then post back the contents of /tmp/xf.log.
Which third party applications are you using to try set the background?

Interesting. As soon as I run
xfdesktop -Q && xfdesktop -e > /tmp/xf.log 2>&1,
the background changed to a previously selected one.

You should fix this in your (most probably) ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css file. It will prevent the parsing of the rest of the file.

Wow, these forums are golden. I googled "xfce background can't be changed" and this was the first hit. I just had this occur to me after a routine Ubuntu update yesterday. Thanks archlinux folks!
After boot I had a black background that couldn't be changed with the gui.
After logging out and back in I had the default background that couldn't be changed with the gui.
I then ran
xfdesktop -Q && xfdesktop -e > /tmp/xf.log 2>&1and immediately my background came back and the gui started allowing changes again.
I'll log out and back in to see if it sticks.
I have no errors or warnings in the log produced.
Ubuntu 22.04.4 and Xfce 4.16
