[SOLVED] Strange mouse wheel behavior

Hello there! While I'm not exactly a newbie for Arch (been running it and fixing a variety of problems on my own for a few years now) I thought this would be an appropriate place to make my first Arch forum post.

So for my problem. I've been using herbstluftwm for some time, and because of certain annoyances I decided to explore other window managers. I next tried i3, but quickly realized that my mouse wheel stopped responding properly. It seems to only detect every 5th or so "click" when I spin the wheel, and only if spun very quickly. I thought this was odd, reloaded herbstluftwm, and the problem went away. Naturally I thought a different window manager might work better, so I tried Awesome. Same mouse wheel problem there. Now, when I switched back to herbstluftwm, the mouse wheel problem persisted.

Further info:
I tried adjusting the sensitivity using imwheel, but this only changed the distance the screen scrolls once a wheel click is actually detected.
I uninstalled imwheel, i3, and Awesome.
Using xev I confirmed that the mouse wheel movement isn't being detected properly.
The mouse is a USB mouse, Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000.
The mouse behaves when plugged into another machine.

I've tried multiple searches, read wikis, investigated mouse configuration files, to no avail. I've had great luck fixing a bunch of different problems, even taught myself some networking in order to set up my home network. But a stupid little mouse wheel has me stumped lol. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!

Hey there,

It would be helpful if you explain? Show examples?

Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] Strange mouse wheel behavior

Sorry if I wasn't descriptive enough. The mouse wheel I have is the type where you can feel distinct "clicks" as you rotate it. For vertically scrolling a page, or zooming in or out while viewing an image, each "click" of the mouse wheel would cause movement (either a scrolling motion or a zoom). That is normal behavior. Mine stopped registering every one of these clicks. Now I must spin it quite quickly in order to register one click. If I keep quickly spinning it in one direction, only about one click per second is actually detected. If I spin it slowly and count, it detecting a click after roughly 15-20 actual clicks, this number is not consistent. I hope this helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Strange mouse wheel behavior

Please post your xorg log and test the behavior in "sudo evtest" and/or "sudo libinput debug-events" .
The non-deterministic behavior is usually a pysical thing (the wheels can loose contact to the switch) - you're sure about the behavior on other HW?
Another thing might be some weird usb autosuspend behavior, do you use TLP or laptop-mode-tools, powertop or similar?

Re: [SOLVED] Strange mouse wheel behavior

The 5.0 linux kernel contains patches to support high resolution scrolling for certain mice. Maybe that's what you're seeing, FWIW a quick check to see whether that is the cause would be to switch to the LTS kernel and check behavior there.

Though that should rather improve responsiveness on lower ticks, so it might not be that contributing.

Okay now I'm really showing my newbieness lol I didn't even think to look at log files. Also, sorry if this output is lengthy and belongs in a pastebin, I am unfamiliar with them and it's getting late, I just want to get to it. Thanks for your patience.

Please post your xorg log

At 7227.668 it appears that libinput is enabling spurious button debouncing. I reconfirmed that it works on another machine, and quite smoothly, I can't detect any button bouncing.

and test the behavior in "sudo evtest" and/or "sudo libinput debug-events"

libinput debug-events confirms that not every click is being detected, and shows the following when one has been detected:
event6   POINTER_AXIS     +58.15s    vert -15.00* horiz 0.00 (wheel)

Thanks to the log confirming I am using libinput drivers, I also found this information about my mouse by running libinput list-devices:

The non-deterministic behavior is usually a pysical thing (the wheels can loose contact to the switch) - you're sure about the behavior on other HW?
Another thing might be some weird usb autosuspend behavior, do you use TLP or laptop-mode-tools, powertop or similar?

As stated earlier, I reconfirmed that it works well on other hardware, but it is also possible that the wheel is in fact wearing out, it's pretty old. I am unfamiliar with TLP or powertop. Although I haven't ever noticed any autosuspend issues with my usb ports, I have had issues with other power management configuration.

Seth, I appreciate your guidance.

V1del, any contribution is good, so thank you. This is certainly something I will look into later if the above information doesn't help reach a solution.

Re: [SOLVED] Strange mouse wheel behavior

Please edit your post and wrap the outputs in "code" tags, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

The libinput test indicates that this is below the userspace, ie. either a kernel module (usbcore/usb-hid - see V1dels link) or actually the hardware (wheel, cable or usb port - if other buttons register for sure it is indeed and very most likely the wheel)

You could try the behavior w/ the lts kernel and/or some live distro to try a different software stack on the same hardware.
Also see whether wheel clicks right after "regular" (left button ;-) clicks register for sure (tricking usb autosuspends)

Re: [SOLVED] Strange mouse wheel behavior

I tried both lts kernel and a live distro, mouse wheel works as expected. I should probably just use lts until I can afford some hardware upgrades anyway. Thanks so much for your help!
