(SOLVED) Kernal panic on reboot, shutdown and lspci command (-k or -v)

Hi Folks,

Loading my new laptop with Arch has proved to be something of a challenge. Most of the problems have been overcome but this last group has proven too much for me and for several other people I have asked. Web searches have brought up other people's experiences of similar problems but reading through they have shown not to be as similar as the subject headings suggested. Most have been related to gui or lvm type operations. I've only got as far as a base system.

I have got as far as installing base and the system boots when powered up. But throughout the many days of retrying and sorting out teasers one by one from live system to base installation it has had a kernel panic on reboot, shutdown or running lspci, with or without a -v or -k flag. I tried lspci in the first place because the ethernet connection kept dropping whenever I changed anything. A clue perhaps, but I don't know how to explore it yet, even after several searches. I have also reloaded the .iso onto two further USB sticks using DD, having suspected a glitch on the initial load.

In each panic instance the system hangs for a minute or two then what looks to be several pages whiz by too fast to read. Sometimes the first few lines stay a moment but I don't even have time to write down the first line before it all scolls past too quickly.

dmesg, it seems, is only useful for the current session. with the -E flag the panic screens take over so I don't even know if it is reporting anything. I have found nothing helpful in the log files, indeed the system journal is unreadable (corrupted), and don't know which others may be helpful.

I'm not expecting a solution at this stage. But what are my options? I could keep on trying if I knew how to get information to you (see below). I could install some software so that I could at least record and post logs and file entries. Or I could simply start again.

Just one point to bear in mind. I am typing this from a midi-tower (running Arch) which is pretty well fixed in place on the end of a very long cat5 cable. The laptop only has the base system so far and is on a short cat5 next to the router at the far end of the room. I can only handwrite there, then type here, any specifics you may ask for.

Thanks,

Mike

It would really help if you'd specify what kind of hardware you are talking here.

FWIW simply from experience this usually happens in conjunction with nvidia hardware and insufficient nouveau support. Should in generally be simply fixable by either blacklisting nouveau or loading it with nouveau.modeset=0 on the kernel params. This will still lead to potentially increased power draw, so you might be further interested in reading about your available options on how to handle dual graphics by reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

Re: (SOLVED) Kernal panic on reboot, shutdown and lspci command (-k or -v)

Thanks, V1del. I realised immediately upon posting I hadn't said anything about what I was installing on, and was looking the detail up to add in when you replied so apologies for that. It's something between a basic and a gaming setup, with slightly <1tB hdd, 16mB RAM, Intel series i7 CPU, and added **Nvidia** graphics card.

Through the flashing screens I did notice [nouveau] - square brackets literal - many times. I hadn't realised its significance.

I did specify a good graphics card for batch processing photographs but there was little detail on the ordering options screen (pcspecialist.co.uk). Hence not possible to make thorough checks about non-'doze compatibility. Fact is, the few indications I got were positive for Tux.

This has been a long journey but I am now quite sure you have set me on the path which will clear up my problems. I am truly grateful. And your speed of response has made my day!

Mike

Oh dear. I ant to mark this as resolved, I'm sure lots of folk will find it useful. But I can't see how. I saw somewhere that editing the op would allow it but it doesn't seem to. Pointer, please anybody?

When you edit post #1,

you should see "Edit post"
next line is "Subject *"

Edit the text field on next line, that will change the title

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
