Why does CD playing ripping always fail?

I have an LG "Slim" USB DVDRW and it  will not play cds or rip them on my arch system, a Thinkpad T440p.
I've tried several different USB cables and all 4 ports and it doesn't make any difference. I also tried downgrading to the LTS kernel but that didn't change anything.  USB flash drives work fine on the T440p; the problem seems to just be with the DVDRW drive. I mostly use the old ripperX application to avoid super heavy dependencies and desktop envirnoment junk.

The drive works fine on a windows MSi GE60 laptop I tested it on using the same CD and cables.

The drive spins a bit and sometimes begins copying data, but it rarely gets through a single track before it just disappears. There's no error message in the ring buffer.

Maybe the T440p USB ports can't deliver enough power for the DVDRW? I'm pretty sure this drive used to work on my T440p, but I only rip CDs once in a while.

Well, I tried abcde. At least I get some error messages this time. It succeeds identifying the CDDB data but then, it spews stuff like this when it starts ripping:

scsi_read error: sector=4273 length=13 retry=1
                 Sense key: 0 ASC: 0 ASCQ: 0
                 Transport error: (null)
                 System error: No such device

                 Sense key: 0 ASC: 0 ASCQ: 0

If you suspect it is a power issue, then try a usb y-cable that combines the power lines of two usb ports or a powered usb hub.

For anyone else stumbling upon this problem: The drive speed and thus the power consumption can be reduced by using the CDSPEEDVALUE parameter in ~/.abcde.conf.

I just had the exact same problem when I traveled with drive and laptop whereat everything worked fine on the dock at home.

Setting

CDSPEEDVALUE="1"

fixed it for me. It's a multiply of 150 kB/s and one can certainly go higher - I just wasn't in the mood for experiments.
