User and root passwords are suddenly rejected

After resuming from suspend this morning as usual I discovered I was unable to login because my password is "incorrect". After doing a full reboot I was able to login locally and ssh to localhost and system IP from the local session both worked, however ssh from remote system was still rejected. After logging out of the local session I was unable to login back in, again the password is ostensibly "incorrect". Further attempts and reboots show that being able to login in locally at all is a rare occurrence and normally the password is rejected right away. Anyone have ideas on what has gone wrong? No even sure where to start since nothing I know of has changed in several weeks.

Hard drive on its way out?

Run a long SMART test from an Arch USB and post the results.

The drive is an SSD that's neither old nor used much so probably not the issue. In hindsight I have a lot of bizarre issues with this system I normally resolve with a reinstall of the base package (if I'm lucky) and this might be one of them.

Please post kernel messages from the journal before and after the resume after which you could not login.
How many times have you reinstalled the base system to address unknown issues?

Something came up yesterday and I needed to get up and running quickly so I ended up just doing a quick reinstall. Thank you loqs and Slithery for trying to help, I really do appreciate the time you took to consider my problem and provide advice.

I have done 'pacman -Syu base' about eight times now from chroot after a 'pacman -Syu' left the system unable to boot.
