Microsoft Arc Mouse loses scroll functionality after a while

I bought the new bluetooth Microsoft Arc mouse for my Linux laptop because I like it and I had the old one (with USB dongle) for many years and it was awesome. Works right away, connects way faster than the Apple magic mouse and the scroll has inertia and that makes scrolling nicer.

But, big but, after a while sitting idle the scrolling stops working. Moreover, I fire up xev and I see that no scrolling events are coming in. Turn mouse on/off, remove batteries and put them back in, nothing. But, as soon as I do a bluetooth service restart and reconnect the mouse, the scrolling works again. There is no output in the system logs related to the mouse other than the little dump of data when it connects:

[95568.957040] input: Microsoft Arc Mouse as /devices/virtual/misc/uhid/0005:045E:0932.0011/input/input53

It's both puzzling and annoying and I have no idea how to debug this. Any ideas on how to avoid this? I hate to have to restart the service every time this little guy falls asleep. Thanks.

Re: Microsoft Arc Mouse loses scroll functionality after a while

I have exactly this problem, and also another one... Now and then, the mouse just stops working for a few seconds. Finally, I have connected an old USB mouse, and when the arc freezes, I get to the USB one. Usually, in less than one minute the arc works again.

This morning I have received an article by Jack Wallen, from TechRepublic. https://www.techrepublic.com/article/wh … 2322950627

He says that he had the same problem with elementary OS, and solved it downgrading the kernel to 4.18.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bl … disconnect ?

Edit: this would only cover the complete loss, not the scolling issue which is likely die to kernel 5.x bugs, some of them being addressed in future releases.

Re: Microsoft Arc Mouse loses scroll functionality after a while

I can't believe it... I thougth that I have already tried that. When I have checked it I have discovered that I saved the file with a wrong file name. I have changed it, and now at least the mouse has not failed for hours.

Now... let's wait for a kernel version that solves the scrolling problem.
