For some while, I've had an intermittent problem on system shutdown, where the sequence stalls with a "stop job running" message. I just tested this and got to:
A stop job is running for MariaDB 10.3.13 database server (26min 37s /28min 5s)
before boredom got the better of me. The keyboard is alive and I can switch to an alternative console (Ctl-Alt-f%d) but cannot get to a login. Ctl-c, Ctl-Z etc have no effect.
Ctl-Alt-Del gave me a message:
Forcibly rebooting: Ctrl-Alt-Del was pressed more than 7 times within 2s
which surprised me as I'd not pressed the combo repeatedly. And in any case the "forcible reboot" did not happen.
As I mentioned, this has been an intermittent problem; it seems to be an issue after a kernel update. I've seen various previous on this on searches, but nothing up to date or quite fitting my experience.
I am running with Xfce on a Samsung laptop - NP300E5C with 8GB and plenty of disk free.
Am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any advice!

I have the same problem. It used to shut down after 1-5 minutes but now it doesn't seem to shutdown at all, well I waited 40 minutes. I have just uninstalled (completely removing /var/lib/mysql) and reinstalled mariadb - didn't help at all ![]()

journalctl is a good place to start looking at your system log.
Also, not being database guy myself, google informs me that there is some kind of problem between mysql and lvm2.monitor.service.
Edit: You might also verify your hardware clock.

Oops, I might have been a bit hasty. Reinstalling seems to have done the trick after a few shutdowns. I have successfully shutdown once and rebooted twice ![]()
Thanks for the suggestions Zod. Before reinstalling mariadb I wondered whether it was anything to do with the hardware clock but it all looked good.
Anyway, glad it's fixed.
