Clone one arch installed partition to another and make dualboot

I am relatively new with installation and booting process although I learned lots of things these two days and nights. I have to partitions say /dev/sdb2 and /dev/sdb3. /dev/sdb2 contains a fresh working Arch installation with EFI boot system at /dev/sdb1. Now I cloned the partition /dev/sdb2 to /dev/sdb3. Now I would like to change the grub and other boot related problem so that I can choose to boot from one of the partition. I tried to give different UUID to each of the partition and changed fstab mounts accordingly for each of them. I generated the grub using grub-mkconfig but os-prober always stuck at the end. Any suggestion will be helpful so that I don't have to make a complete installation on the other partition.

Make sure to differentiate between UEFI vs BIOS mode

Edit: I don't know what the ramification would be of the original Arch install waking up on a different partition (beyond the grub configuration).

Re: Clone one arch installed partition to another and make dualboot

If os-prober is truly getting stuck (erroring out), then I would recommend completely reinstalling GRUB using the grub-install command (might be a good idea anyway after messing with partitions).

In terms of general slowness, I've experienced os-prober taking obscene amounts of time scanning large hard disks, so it may just be taking a while. In that case, once it coughs up the configuration, then disable os-prober and copy the configuration to /etc/grub.d/40_custom so that you don't have to wait so long next time.

In terms of ramifications of Arch waking up on a new partition, as long as /etc/fstab is repaired it should all work out.

Or just bypass grubs automatic configuration and create your own minimal config...

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan
