Hello, I often use my laptop with the lid closed attached to an external keyboard and monitor. When DPMS kicks in, the monitor is turned off and I guess here systemd-logind finds the lid closed and puts the laptop to sleep. The problem is that I cannot wake it up by pressing a key in the external keyboard. I need to open the lid and press any key in the internal keyboard. My /proc/acpi/wakeup looks like

I haven't checked in the BIOS the setting to keep the usb port powered on suspend (to charge devices) but could this be the issue? (I can't reboot for a while now as I am processing something that will take a long time on this laptop)

I don't have the knowledge to help you solve this problem but i think it's a very bad idea to function the laptop with closed lid. The temperature may not melt your screen but maybe after long time of use will cause some irreversible problem to it.
