[Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Hallo friends.
I'm using Arch x86-64, latest update as of date 20/04/2019 with Plasma 5.15.4 and Kaffeine 2.0.16. I also have a TechnoTrend S2-4600S dvb-S2 USB-receiver, connected to my system, which has an Intel core i7 7700T processor and 32 GBytes of Ram.
Until last Thursday evening, I was able to watch television with Kaffeine and the connected dvb-receiver. But on Friday (19/04/20019) then, after running updates for Arch before final shutdown on Thursday night, I was no more able to receive any channel due to an error message, when I opened Kaffeine next day:
.
"Didn't find a device with valid settings or access permissions are wrong.
Please check the Configure Television window.".
.
I checked for the device in Kaffeine, but there is no (more) device recognized (detected), so that it is impossible to receive channels. Here are the messages of dmesg, when I replugin the TechnoTrend receiver:

"[ 1150.407650] usb 1-4: new high-speed USB device number 6 using xhci_hcd

These messages are the same I received, when the receiver was recognized by Kaffeine before Friday, when Kaffeine worked fine with tv.
I also checked for the permissions in /dev/dvb/adapter:

"s -la adapter0/
insgesamt 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 120 20. Apr 12:53 .
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 60 20. Apr 12:53 ..

crw-rw----+ 1 root video 212, 5 20. Apr 12:53 dvr0
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 212, 3 20. Apr 12:53 frontend0
crw-rw----+ 1 root video 212, 7 20. Apr 12:53 net0"

Me, the user, is member of group 'video'. So, the permissions seem correct.

I also connected this TechnoTrend receiver to another computer with an older Gentoo system and here, the receiver is recognized well and I can receive channels and watch tv. So, the receiver itself seems not broken.

Do you have any idea, what happened? What can I do to fix this (for me) serial problem?

Thank you very much in advance.

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

PLease use [ code ] tags, see https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

You may want to change the title to something like : trendtech dvb-S receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

DVB-S wiki page indicates xine can also be used, does that allow watching ?

But on Friday (19/04/20019) then, after running updates for Arch before final shutdown on Thursday night, I was no more able to receive any channel due to an error message, when I opened Kaffeine next day:

please post /var/log/pacman.log (probably large, use a pastebin client)

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Thank you for quick reply.
I am at a friend now, not in reach of my 'trouble' computer. So, I just could only adopt my first post with code tags.
.
Don't be angry, but as far as I know, Kaffeine uses libvlc as engine..
My aim is to make kaffeine working (again) with my TechnoTrend receiver.
And to be honest, I have no good idea to make xine run with the TechnoTrend receiver, exactly, any receiver.
What I've read, was too complicated and will not feed the advantages I am used to have with Kaffeine.
Later, when I'm back home, I will send my /var/log/pacman.log with wgetpaste generated link.

Hope, that this log file will help to solve this issue.

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Now, back at home, I had to search for a working 'pastebin' app. I found pastebinit.
So, here is my snipsnap of /var/log/pacman.log, with entry date of 17/04/2019 (before my trouble began).
https://pastebin.com/h4pEaBsn
The upgrade in the night of 18th to 19th I started on 19th just after midnight.
But, as I said, on afternoon of 19th (yesterday), Kaffeine did no more find (recognize) my dvb receiver.

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Thank you, this is really a helpful reply, a good explanation.
There is only one question, pls: How do I downgrade Arch packages? With Gentoo, I could select a package by version,
but with Arch I never did...

Thank you again.

Downgrading_packages.
Unfortunately the bug report I linked to is on the arch bug tracker not upstream.
Would you be willing to help locate the cause of the issue and report it upstream?

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

I followed your instruction site to downgrade and entered:

pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/v4l-utils-1.16.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

but unfortunately after executing and rebooting nothing changed.
Exactly, because of that, I downgraded the linux kernel, the linux-headers to 5.0.6-arch and also kaffeine to 2.0.15. But no matter, what I downgraded, kaffeine doesn't find the TechnoTrend device.

My pacman/pkg/cache contains:

-rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 1077232 15. Nov 22:51 v4l-utils-1.16.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
-rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 1077912 17. Dez 23:28 v4l-utils-1.16.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
-rw-r--r-- 1 0 0 1076944 18. Apr 21:31 v4l-utils-1.16.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Would you be willing to help locate the cause of the issue and report it upstream?

I would, but how could I locate the cause of the issue? Do you mean wit trial and error?
And: what do you mean with 'report it upstream'? To whom?

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

I jumped a step ahead assuming the issue would be v4l-utils 1.16.5-1.
If you restore all packages to the date before the issue occurred is the device detected again?

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Oh, thanks a lot, I think, I learn a lot about Arch configuring today .
In fact, I assume, I made it. Beside the downgrading of v4l-utils, I fear, I broke some settings for kaffeine in my home directory.
I created a new normal user with an empty desktop, logged in as him and when I started kaffeine, the device was found.
So, I think, all necessary settings for kaffeine were empty and then will be created new by installing the device, the satellite, the channels and so on.
Starting with new, clean files for kaffeine.

I did not reset my system to an earlier date.
But to prove, that cleaning the settings for kaffeine in my home directory will solve my problem, I will do this tomorrow, on Sunday.

I will let you know.

At any rate: Thank you and good night!

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

I had the same problem with my Hauppauge WinTV dualHD tuner and kaffeine. Following instructions referenced in loqs post I downgraded all packages to 2019/04/17 and everything is working again. No other changes required. Thanks for the tip!

I had previously tried rebuilding kaffeine and also downgrading some of the more recent updates without success.

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Update: After downgrading the packages and verifying everything worked. I set v4l-utils to ignore in pacman.conf and upgraded everything else back to the current version. Kaffeine continued to work so the only issue is v4l-utils. Version 1.16.3-1 works fine. With 1.16.5-1 I get this message when launching kaffeine:

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Though I may be (too) late, I will talk about my success.
Finally, despite I received the same error before, I just had to change to the tv settings, wher the receiver device was shown on a (third) tab, like I know from before.
I think, that this was lost while I played with the settings, the v4l-utils aund so on.
When I set everything (satellite source, lnb...) everything was fine again with my (unchanged) channels, so that I could watch tv again.

Just a question: How can I prevent pacman from upgrading to v4l-utls-1.16.5-1?
As I have no idea, when the new version will work without problems.

At any rate, folks: Thank you very much! I will mark the thread as [Solved] now.

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

To prevent pacman from updating v4l-utils, just add this line to your /etc/pacman.conf file:

IgnorePkg = v4l-utils

Re: [Solved] TechnoTrend S2-4600 receiver no longer recognized (Kaffeine)

Also had similar problem with a analog/digital/radio pci-e happauge board.
Simply downgrading to previous version of v4l-utils (1.16.3-1) did the trick by itself.
lspci showed the device was there, and mplayer, vlc would play the video capture device.  All dmesg and lsmod showed the device was init and loaded.
Not sure why v4l-utils has an effect on the digital part.  I believe the analog part of the board is not affected by the v4l-utils, I may have to give it an input to know for sure.  But seems to work with tvtime.
There isn't a dependency on v4l-utils for the digital.

Thanks to all - this saved my Sunday, Downgrading to

v4l-utils-1.16.3-1

did the trick here. Nothing else was needed to make kaffeine recognizes the dvb-device again.

Update: With the latest version 1.16.6-1 of v4-utils kaffeine recognizes the dvb-receiver again. I tested on my system.
The problem with version 1.16.5-1 seem to be solved now when installing 1.16.6-1.
