PulseAudio: weird noise when changing output device

Hi,

I usually change a lot my output device between speakers and my headphone. However, everytime I switch the output device a horrible noise is added to the sound. I always have to kill pulseaudio and start it again (pulseaudio --k and pulseaudio --start). After restarting pulseaudio, the noise vanishes.

Does someone know what should be the problem?

I have similar issue, except it happens semi-randomly. The only reliable way I was able to replicate semi-reliably is by having it sit idle for about 3-4 hours. When doing that, it happens almost every other time. Restarting pulseaudio does help. So far non of the tips in the arch wiki helped to eliminate it. No errors in logs or anywhere else that i can locate, so any help would be much appreciated.

The solution I can think of is to have a udev rule to kill pulseaudio when unplugging one device and starting pulseaudio when plugging in another devise. This of course doesn't address the real problem of where the noise is coming from so it is merely cosmetic. I have no idea how to investigate where the extra noise comes from. I assume the noise is persistent and not just in plugin and I assume the noise exist in whatever output is used.

Does the sampling rate between the two differ? Outputs of

pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

in [ code ] tags from before and after the switch? Also maybe in general

systool -vm snd_hda_intel
aplay -lL
