Intel hd 630 performance settings

Hello, I'll be stuck with this igpu for the next few months but I quite appreciate how fast it is for 2D. I've even seen phoronix article here showing that intel is able to compete with nvidia/amd on 2D performance: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= … x_2d&num=1

Background, is I have a i3-3850K, i3-wm, firefox and the only games I play are mostly Civ5 (prob won't work on my 4K display though!), dosbox, SC2 in Wine, and retroarch/mamesdl.

I first noticed huge slowdowns even just moving firefox in i3 with xf86-video-intel so I switched to modesetting:

    Section "Device"
            Identifier "igpu"
            #Driver "intel"
            Driver "modesetting"
    #       Option "TearFree" "true"
    EndSection

It was much smoother after that.  I also have i915.enable_rc6=0 enabled but nothing else.

Are people finding the modesetting driver to be better for X?  Also, should I be running compton?  I had tearing without it but unsure if things are slower now with compositing - I've always disabled it as I thought it would slow down gaming.  Any other kernel options or settings I should be aware of?

Re: Intel hd 630 performance settings

Also, fwiw, I have a ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero mobo, I may look into checking on tweaks there for more igpu performance as well.
