I am using an Intel NUC connected to a monitor with headphone out for sound.
It took a while but I am only able to get sound using the following:
speaker-test -c2 -D hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=0Here is the output of aplay -L
...$ aplay -L

Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)

I usually switch outputs with pavucontrol (which is pulseaudio).
I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...
Look ma, no mouse.

I've tried pavucontrol after reading about it but it just hangs saying

You'll need of course to install pulseaudio, and optionally the pulseaudio-alsa.

I reinstalled pulseaudio, pulseaudio-alsa and pavucontrol. Afterwards, started pavucontrol and in the Output Devices I unmuted the audio for the speakers.
Everything is working now but I am left wondering why it didn't work before.
Thanks again for all your help.
