Re: slow games...

Install the mesa-apps package, run glxinfo (while X is running), and post what it outputs.

Re: slow games...

Hola

I have the same issue on two laptops with nvidia cards:

glxinfo seems pretty ok and glxgears gets over 3000fps
But games like supertux, ppracer, frozen-bubble,... are laagin very bad (supertux with 5fps !!)
It seems like something with sdl isn't correctly.

If you need more debug ouput please tell me ;-)

Thanks

Re: slow games...

They are all running with opengl mode? (I belive supertux is in SDL mode by default, no acceleration - still should'nt be that bad though). You remembered to set the driver to "nvidia" in xorg.conf, load "glx" in xorg.conf and make sure DRI is not loaded in xorg.conf? What is in /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Does the games run with lots of antialiasing (for example if antialiiasing is set for all programs in nvidia-settings)?

Re: slow games...

Ahm supertux with opengl gets 5fps and software I get 20fps....which laags too.
my xorg.conf is correct.
Xgl with compiz runs perfectly for example.
The logfile is also ok.
And antialiasing is set to application-specific.

I really don't know what this could be...I'll check out a few more opengl games which are not using sdl

So I tried "torcs" now and it works really good, no problems with it.

Re: slow games...

I hope you are not running XGL/compiz at the same time while attempting to play any games. If you do, you have found the culprit: yourself. wink

Of course not...but I tried to explain, that its not really a xorg.configuration problem

Re: slow games...

maybe you have composite "yes" ? I know that slows down my nvidia card atleast

Re: slow games...

Yes this was one of my first ideas, but the framerate doesn't really change in supertux if composite on/off. :-/

Re: slow games...

Yes - for what it's worth - I have the same problem here.  Games like AisleRiot Solitaire run VERY slow.  When you drag and drop there is a long delay followed by a slow move leaving each card redraw showing on the screen.  Very poor video performance on an otherwise fast lappy.  :-(

Re: slow games...

Ah I solved the problem !!!

The problem appears with the "normal" arch-kernel
With the "beyond" kernel everything works just fine :-D

Hope this solves your problems too!!

But the great question would, why beyond solves this ?
It would be really important that this change will be done in the normal kernel!

Re: slow games...

AFAIK Frozen Bubble is not using OpenGL.
What was difference between kernels for you?
Are you using some new kind of hardware?
Could you describe your motherboard?

Re: slow games...

Hmm ... here's hoping the kernel guys start cross-referencing configurations with Beyond-Kernel guys.  I for one don't want to run the Beyond-Kernel ... and it ill-behooves Archlinux to have it standard kernel thus handicapped.  My fingers are crossed.

I see nothing beyond sheer speculation "oh it works fine with beyond, must be a kernel problem!".  If I had more to go on, I'd "give a damn".  Please provide real information.

Don't bark at me for making an observation.  I didn't report it worked on beyond.  Someone else did.  If you notice my first post on this - I reported what behavior I was experiencing.  That's all.

Re: slow games...

i doubt that this might be a kernel problem!
always run normal stock arch kernel and had never ever a problem with nvidia driver or 3d performance. runs smooth here 8)

plz give more infos, so that one can surround the problem roll

Re: slow games...

Hola...sorry for late posting ;-)

The described problem occures on my two test-computers:

Vaio Laptop DualCore, NVIDIA 7600go  and  a Vaio Laptop with just a centrino and a 7200go i think (last not mine and not really reachable for details now wink )

Ok, but I ran both with the nvidida proprietary driver and the current arch-kernel.
Now I left the whole things (Xorg, drivers,...) and just pacman -S linux26-beyond and the problem is away.

Well I have not really any hint from where it comes, but i noticed, the keyboard is very slow sometimes and so I plugged an extern board and this problem was also away (this problem was not in X ! )

Please tell me if you need special infos !
