Messed up low resolution scaling when using Nouveau (Thinkpad R61)

Hey community,
for some reason Nouveau can't display lower than native screen resolutions on my R61. Even when using an Ubuntu live CD I get the same error.
Another issue is that whenever I shutdown my laptop I get one of two error messages:
NMI: PCI system error (SERR) for reason a1 on CPU 0
NMI: PCI system error (SERR) for reason b1 on CPU 0

After a while I decided to try out the nvidia-340xx driver and both issues disappeared. I'd much rather use Nouveau though. Could my issue be the famous Thinkpad 2007 GPU error? I'd much rather use nouveau than nvidia, because it just has more features and feels much faster in some cases than the nvidia driver PLUS, Xorg won't suppert the nvidia-340 legacy driver anymore in a year or so.

Yes, obviously. When I tested nouveau on my Ubuntu Live CD I changed the resolution with xrandr

Maybe you could post your xrandr output?  Also, including what steps you have taken is typically helpful when making inquiries for assistance.
