[Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

As of recently, last couple of weeks, I had a sound card with multiple output in `pavucontrol-qt`. I could use normal out, which had stereo, and 5.1 options, along with some others, and an SP/DIFF output. I didn't really make any changes to my knowledge, but now I don't even have any options at all, just a "No cards available for configuration" message.

I'm still getting stereo audio from the "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo" that it's showing me, but I can't change to 5.1 sound or use the SP/Diff. I've looked all over the wiki to make sure all of my settings are good, and I haven't really found any problems. Can anyone help me out?

It may be related to conflicts with my new Nvidia graphics card, but I don't know how to resolve the conflicts and get the onboard Nvidia chipset working again.

Re: [Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

This definitely appears to be related to the new graphics card. Obviously, I can't blacklist the driver, since both sound cards are using the same driver. Not sure what the next step is.

Re: [Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

I believe this has something to do with sound card indexing. Your new graphics card probably added new sound cards to your pool and the indices are all renewed. You don't need to blacklist but you have to setup ALSA, check alsamixer, and setup your alsa configuration file to setup the persistent sound index.

Re: [Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

If you've never mucked around with ALSA configuration there should be no reason to start now, pulse can and does properly differentiate between different cards. Post

I tried removing the card via sys/devices, but that didn't do anything except remove the card from the "aplay -l" list. I also tried blacklisting the card in modprobe.d but that only made the sound on the primary card very quiet, and also removed the GPU from "aplay -l".

Alsamixer lists three sound cards. PulseAudio (Device -), VIA VT1708S (Device 0), and Nvidia GPU 99 HDMI/DP (Device 1). I've done what I can there to disable/mute the GPU sound card, Device 1, but it hasn't really affected anything.

Re: [Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

That's a non default pulse configuration, what did you try to do?  If you've knowingly done that, elaborate on what your intended end goal was, and post your configuration files. Otherwise if you've done that system wide, revert your changes in /etc/pulse/default.pa if you've done that on your user, revert/remove ~/.config/pulse/default.pa and/or ~/.pulse/default.pa

If neither of these statements are true (unlikely, both of these things don't happen by default), post pulse's interpretation of card detection

systemctl --user mask pulseaudio.socket
pulseaudio -k #Kill and disable pulse autostart
pulseaudio -vvv #Start with verbose logging

I've backed out all of my changes. I don't think I've ever made changes to any pulse audio files.

Re: [Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

.ifexists module-udev-detect.so tsched=0

Doesn't make any sense, if anything you would want to add the tsched=0 to the next line actually loading the module (but you usually don't actually want to set this setting, whatever issue you had that looks like it would be fixed by setting that, is in most cases better fixed at the actually problematic source)

Re: [Solved] Pulse Replaced Sound Cards with Built-In Stereo

It worked. Thank you very much.

I obviously added that at some point, vim put my cursor right on that line. I don't remember when or why though. Glad it's working again.
