Hi there.
I've got the problem that I can't open or save files via LibreOffice, Firefox or Code as the dialog is not working correctly. It only opens a white window:

xdg-mime query default inode/directory
pcmanfm.desktopI'm using the i3 tiling window manager.
Here is a list of a few packages which might or might not be relevant:

Should I also post the machine and boot ID?
No, the important part is the static hostname.
From the photo, the dialogs don't seem to be floating?

I don't know about all dialogs, but the "Set Up an Existing Email Account" dialog from Thunderbird is floating.

Try to run an affected program from an interactive shell and see whether it yells some errors at you.

Ok, I just did that. Firefox gave me no errors and I was not able to even see if code got some errors.
Thought I noticed this, which only occurs when there are enough files within a directory: https://i.imgur.com/BP1kcYN.png

Try something simpler (gedit?) - FF will most likely invoke a subprocess and redirect the output somewhere.

gedit does not output any errors.

The settings dialog of Birdtray (which itself opens as a floating dialog) can open the file chooser dialog successfully, thought Code, Firefox, gedit and LibreOffice can't.

Apparently uses Qt5.
This is a GTK bug but w/o *any* error messages the next best thing you can do is to downgrade gtk or hope that a future upgrade fixes it.
Is this a graphical thing? Can you interact w/ the semi-broken dialog from post #7?
If I should guess from what seems to be the bezel, the dialog is simply VASTLY oversized and shrinking it might reveal its normal contents.

To which version would I have to downgrade?

I can interact with it perfectly fine.

The last one that works? How am I supposed to know.
Did you try to simply shrink the dialog?

Atleast with the mouse cursor I am not able to shrink it (thought I am able to shrink the QT dialog that way).

The window will set a bad minium size, to get some facts on this, dump xprop and xwininfo on it.
Moving away your gtk configs might "solve" this.

It's not the window:
WM_NORMAL_HINTS(WM_SIZE_HINTS):
program specified minimum size: 879 by 330
program specified base size: 0 by 0But the window is huge ( compared to 2560×1440):
Absolute upper-left X: -167
Absolute upper-left Y: -396
Relative upper-left X: 4
Relative upper-left Y: 0
Width: 2894
Height: 2170=> Something in your i3 config?

Atleast I can't see anything within the config which might cause the issue, but I might have missed some things.
My i3 config.

Not really.
Are the windows also oversized under other WMs (openbox)?

Ok, I'll take a look at it.
A friend of mine also told me to check the dpi settings:
xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
screen #0:
dimensions: 2560x1440 pixels (677x381 millimeters)
resolution: 96x96 dots per inchxrdb -query | grep dpi
Xft.dpi: 150Note: 14" 16:9 WQHD display (210 ppi according to notebookcheck)
I'm wondering if this is correct, as it definitly does not look correct with 3 different values.

This would render too small elements (eg. fonts) but from your screenshot that does not seem to be the case (?) and the windows should certainly not be too big (rather too small)

It works perfectly fine under openbox. (tested with gedit and firefox)

So it's either a bug in i3 or something about your i3 config. Try i3 on a fresh user account (w/o any custom config)

It works fine when creating a new user account, thought every UI element is a bit small.

So it's something™ in your i3wm or gtk config. Drop them individually (just move them away, you don't have to delete them) (ideally not while running a GUI session as that user) and see which one it is.
