[SOLVED] Bios settings lost randomly, date and time are preserved.

Since some days, every now and then, my PC wont boot, asking me to press F1 to restore bios settings.
Since when it is off it is physically unplugged from the mains, i think that the problem could be that the CMOS battery is simply failing.
However, what puzzles me is that the date and the time is retained.
Motherboard is an asus z97-k.
Do you have any explaination for it? Could it be a software problem?
System is fully updated to about one month ago (and i'm going to replace the battery anyway).

Thanks for your attention.

impossible to answer, replace battery first, then see what happens

Re: [SOLVED] Bios settings lost randomly, date and time are preserved.

Battery replaced, seems to work fine (finger crossed).
ntp is out of the equation because there was no boot into OS; i checked time in the bios as soon as it said the cmos settings were lost.
Every time it happened, it retained date and time, while losing the settings.
My guess is that the cmos memory was corrupted and just by case. date was not?

Re: [SOLVED] Bios settings lost randomly, date and time are preserved.

The mechanism for storing the data is different than that of the clock.  One is (likely) a static RAM, the other a set of registers that are updated on a periodic basis.  Sounds like the static RAM is a little more sensitive to a low power rail than is the clock.
