[Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Hi to all,
I purchased a wireless USB Adapter to connect wireless to my router with my old PC because it doesn't have an internal Wi-Fi card.
I am tired of reading the "Wireless network configuration" article on the Wiki, but I can't understand how to do it.
Please could you put me in the right direction, keeping in mind that I am very limited in knowledge.
I show the output of the commands: lsusb, and lsmod. Please indicate me if more information is necessary.

[alberto@trujillo ~]$ lsusb

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Your card is detected and the driver initialized. Clarify the exact steps and commands and outputs you are using to try and get a connection.

Mod note: Moving to NC

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Thanks for answering.
What I do to connect, is first disconnect the cable directly to the router and the following:

[alberto@trujillo ~]$ sudo nmcli dev wifi connect my_network password my_password
Error: No Wi-Fi device found.
[alberto@trujillo ~]$

The output of the command "dmesg | more" is very extensive (about 10 times more than what it published), do you need me to publish everything, or is it enough?

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

@Alberto-Trujillo can you check dmesg,  has the start been lost? (One of the first few lines should contain "Linux version ")
Edit:
If it has the kernel option log_buf_len=4M should increase the size.

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Could be the entire ringbuffer is consumed w/ this shit…
Error -110 and the re-occuring usb device would suggest power draw excess, the dongle draws more power than the port can provide.
Is there an external hub involved?

Also you got to be very honest here, because that's hyper-relevant: this isn't a raspberry pi or similar, but a serious piece of HW that could be expected to drive an electric heater over usb?

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

I do not understand what you're saying.
I do not have any external periphery apart from the keyboard and a nano usb for the mouse.
Also the wifi usb adapter, I just bought it and that's why I'm trying to configure it.
If you think that is threatening to reheat the pc, I remove it, and I continue using the cable to connect to the Internet.

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

@seth was suggesting, that a mini PC like a RasPi may not supply enough electrical power to correctly operate a USB device with high power consumption (like a heater)
Are you using a desktop PC? A laptop?

Work through this page methodically. If/when you hit an issue, post the exact command and error messages.

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Hi Loqs,
You tell me to check again the first lines of the "dmesg" command, because you say it must contain "Linux version". I'll show you the start of the output and you can see that "Linux version" does not appear.

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_parameters

The ringbuffer is consumed w/ this shit, therefore the head of any boot is probably gone pretty fast (thus the request to increase the buffer size and loqs already told you to increase it to 4M)

Still try what Jason asked you, but I assume this is on the USB level, so ensure to disable usb autosuspend (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Power_management#USB_autosuspend - "-1" will turn it off completely, but this could be re-enabled by tools like TLP or your DE powermanagement etc. so pay attention to that) and also try another port (plug the dongle into other slots)

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Another way to get the kernel messages

journalctl -kb #

where # is the boot number you want the messages from,  0 for the current boot,  -1 for the last boot,  -2 for two boots ago etc.

Journal#Filtering_output

@seth if you have time please have a look at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=245708

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Hello again everyone,

Surely by now you will have noticed that English is not my first language. Partly because of that and also because I'm still a baby as far as linux is concerned, It is being a bit difficult to understand your suggestions.

I appreciate that you have been involved in trying to help me; but I must say that my knowledge of linux is so limited that I do not understand well the comments you make.

seth: surely you are right in what you have observed that happens with my pc, but I do not know what I have to do to apply what you tell me. Anyway, thank you for your comments.

loqs: I will try to carefully study the references that you suggest, and also to you I thanks for your interest in helping me.
For now I'm going to leave this issue of trying to setup my wifi, until I document myself a little better.
Thank you very much everyone.

Sincerely: Alberto

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Hi Seth,

That's right, Spanish from Gran Canaria. I came to live in Poole, Dorset 20 years ago, and we have made England our home.

Thanks for the references in my mother tongue.
Have a good day!

Re: [Solved] I can't make the wireless USB adapter work

Hello again,
I let you know that I solved my problem by get rid of the wireless USB Adapter (I think it was faulty), and installing a PCI-E Adapter (Wireless Network Card), which worked out of the box.
Thanks again for your interest in helping me.
