I have installed tecplot on my arch system. But while running the ./tec file some error was thrown as "symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Done_MM_Var".

After searching the internet I downgrading the fontconfig and freetype2 versions using the downgrade aur package. And now it works.

I think downgrading like this is not a permanent solution. Do you have any ideas. Thank you!.

How did you install it? If that's how you need to run it, it isn't really installed, but that's likely beside the point.

I couldn't navigate their site to get the trial download (and there are three different flavors anyways) but I gather this is distributed only as a precompiled binary, in which case the only real solution is to wait for them to compile a new version or use it in a container/vm.

It is tecplot 360. After downloading there is a .sh which installs it. It will ask for the directory in which to install.

After installing and navigating to the bin directory inside there is tec360 file which is executable where I was facing the error.

Update:
After downgrading the freetype2 and fontconfig versions, other programs such as vim, etc are giving an error "vim: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpangoft2-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: FcWeightFromOpenTypeDouble"

And when I upgrade to the latest versions vim works but tecplot doesnot.

Update:
In ubuntu it is working fine.

As a general rule, do not install things outside of pacman; it's asking for trouble. Instead, write a PKGBUILD that leverages upstream's installer so that it installs properly and pacman can handle dependencies for you reasonably.

To get back to the point where that's a reasonable option, you need to manually remove all the things the .sh installed (hopefully, they have an uninstall.sh that is sane and will take care of that). Then you can move forward with writing the PKGBUILD.

It's working fine in ubuntu, because ubuntu ships a dated fontconfig, which this binary was linked to…

You can also try whether preloading the old fontconfig lib (DON'T INSTALL IT! Just copy it somewhere) works.

I really do not know how to write a PKGBUILD. Even after writing the PKGBUILD the two different versions of fontconfig will conflict with one another at the installation prompt(pacman) and ultimately there would be only one version of fontconfig in the system. I think that would be the case. And sadly there is no uninstall.sh file.

Alternatively you should be able to use LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the directory where you put the old libraries

In my opinion better solutions would be to run the whole application in a chroot or set the rpath with e.g. patchelf

Also notice that this is likely not a stable condition. The more the system version advances against the version the executable was compiled and linked against, the more problems you might/will encounter.
