Re: Ethernet DHCPCD not work after update kernel to 5.1.2-arch1-1-ARCH

Sure it's the kernel and not eg. dhcpcd? Tried the LTS kernel?
Maybe a concurrent service? What brings the interfaces up and obtains the wifi lease?

If it's indeed the kernel, post a complete journal for the boot ("sudo journalctl -b"), the dhcpcd output won't help.

Re: Ethernet DHCPCD not work after update kernel to 5.1.2-arch1-1-ARCH

I just installed Arch on my new laptop last week, and I've been having what looks like the same problem. However, I had the problem before the kernel update as well as after.

Interfaces:

$ ip addr
----------------------------------------------------------------------

1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    inet 127.0.0.1/8 scope host lo
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 ::1/128 scope host
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
2: enp57s0f1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 80:fa:5b:69:3f:be brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: wlp0s20f3: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc noop state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether 48:f1:7f:d7:9a:b5 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

Starting dhcpcd sometimes works, but usually I get:

$ sudo dhcpcd enp57s0f1
----------------------------------------------------------------------

enp57s0f1: waiting for carrier
enp57s0f1: carrier acquired

But unfortunately the same problem occurs when I run "sudo dhcpcd enp57s0f1".

Re: Ethernet DHCPCD not work after update kernel to 5.1.2-arch1-1-ARCH

OK rebooted, tried connecting again and it works. After repeating multiple times, I see that it seems to have stopped failing altogether. I haven't changed anything since the last post, but using r8168 definitely seems better!

Re: Ethernet DHCPCD not work after update kernel to 5.1.2-arch1-1-ARCH

Did a few more tests, and here's what I've found.

If I go back to using r8169 it works the first time after rebooting. But if I reboot and try again it starts failing. After rebooting and trying again multiple times it failed every time.
Then if I switch back to r8168 it fails the first time after reboot. But if I reboot and try again it starts working. After rebooting and trying again multiple times it worked every time.

I tried switching between r8168 and r8169 a few times and saw this behavior consistently. The first reboot after switching from r8168 to r8169 it works, but after further reboots it fails, and vice versa for switching back to r8168. I had tried r8168 as suggested on the Arch wiki before, but I guess I might not have tried rebooting more that once so I thought it didn't work.

So thanks for the suggestion seth -- problem solved!

it fails the first time after reboot. But if I reboot and try again it starts working.

Do you have a parallel windows installation?

Nope no Windows, only Arch.

With absolutely no intention to hijack this thread, can you tell me why could a windows installation have an effect on this?

You see, I have been struggling with this error for a few days, first I thought it was netctl, switched to systemd-networkd just to face the same problem, in both cases if I set static ip, everything looks fine but I can't ping nothing outside localhost, if I enable dhcp I don't obtain ip... Same thing downgrading kernel versions, or systemd, same problem... RIGHT until I read your question, I discover that if I boot windows then Arch, network works flawlessly, strange.

I have ran some tests, after doing the boot-windows workaround, I have shutdown/restart Arch multiple times and I haven't been able to reproduce the problem again, I will pay attention when it occurs again, but I sure was surprised to see the issue was gone with just booting to windows

btw, my Arch box is up to date with linux 5.1.7 and my nic is a Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 using module r8169

Re: Ethernet DHCPCD not work after update kernel to 5.1.2-arch1-1-ARCH

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Du … t_Start-Up

Hibernating (regardless of the OS, but windows is the usual suspect here because of fast boot) leaves the HW in an undefined state. Some HW is more prone to be screwed than other, but network and radio is probably on the top of the list.

However in your case you'll rather need https://www.archlinux.org/packages/comm … _64/r8168/ and carry-over effects are probably more the "cure" than the disease.

I will check my Windows settings, because as long as I remember I have Fast Boot disabled, but maybe some update turned it on again.

Will try that driver also. Thanks for the recommendations.
