[SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hello together,
since the standard kernel is updated to version 5.0.0/1/2 my thinkpad is not booting anymore. The LTS-kernel works fine.
Actually i could not find any error messages in the logs. Even during the boot process no messages at all are shown. Maybe someone can give some hints where to look for the reason of this error.
Thank you in advance

PS: I already tried the boot options nomodeset an acpi=off. But without any success.

Rule out https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=244867 there's a patch in that thread that you can rebuild the linux package with to check if it's the same issue.

Thank you for your answer. Actually I am not sure how/where to apply the patch.

The problem exists also in 5.0.3.

Read the ABS instructions for acquiring the PKGBUILD and this page for information on how to apply the patch within the PKGBUILD

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hi,
I'm currently compiling the 5.0.6 Kernel with this patch. When it is done, I give you feedback.

So even applying this patch does not resolves the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hy everyone,
i just updated the kernel to 5.0.8 but it is still the same problem. When I boot this kernel I only get a black screen. After restart using the LTS kernel i am not able to find any thing in the log files. I first thought i would be the same bug as described in this thread. But since this problem is solved with 5.0.8, it might be a different problem here with my T480s. So maybe one of you has an idea where I can look for the origin of this bug. Thank you in advance.

Edit: The Problem remains with kernel 5.0.9 and 5.0.10.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

I just updated to 5.0.12 an the problem remains. After choosing the kernel version in systemd-boot only the backlight of the screen is on but then nothing else happens. If I check the logs after rebooting into lts kernel (Gnome Logs) there is no entry for the boot into the normal kernel. So I have actually no idea where to look for the source of this problem. There is no difference either the pc is running on battery or AC.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hello together,

I am still struggling with the non-LTS-version of the Kernel. The currently installed version is 5.1.2. I just test if it is a problem with the internal monitor but even booting with an external monitor connected results in the same issue. Yesterday I tested if it might be a problem with the graphic card and added the kernel parameter "3", such that no desktop environment is started but also without any result. Maybe someone of you has good idea how to proceed here.
Thank you in advance

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Please post the kernel messages from a boot with the issue and one without

# jounalctl -kb #

where # is the number of the boot 0 for the current , -1 for previous boot e.t.c. see also Journal#Filtering_output

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hello loqs,

sadly there are no entries in journalctl for the boot with the non-lts-kernel. I can post the kernel messages for the boot of the lts-kernel.

If you have an idea how to get some informations of the failed boot process, i would be very happy.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

If the 4.20 series worked then https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1846246 covers how to bisect between 4.20 and 5.0 to try and find the cause.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hy loqs,
thank you for the tip of bisecting the commits between 4.20 and 5.0

So I found out that version "4.20.0-rc1-git-00027-gcdbc848b0341" is the last working version. The next commit "[229c55ccb487c0c10721fdb92af874d7b8671cda] arch: Move initrd= parsing into do_mounts_initrd.c" results in the misbehaviour of the boot process.

So I guess there is something wrong with the kernel parameter I use. I use systemd-boot with the following configuration
title Arch
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /intel-ucode.img
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
options initrd root=/dev/nvme0n1p2 resume=/dev/nvme0n1p3

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

I would suggest changing

options initrd root=/dev/nvme0n1p2 resume=/dev/nvme0n1p3

to

options root=/dev/nvme0n1p2 resume=/dev/nvme0n1p3

Would also sugest using Persistent_block_device_naming although I do not think that not using persistent naming is the cause of the current issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Thinkpad T480s does not boot with non-lts-kernel

Hy loqs,

thank you for your advice. Removing this parameter fixes the problem.
