why firefox have some terrible fonts?

Hi all,

Why the antialising of the FF is so terrible?...if you compare with Opera or even IE.

I belive firefox doesn't setup antialiasing by itself, you have to edit the antialiasing settings either by editing ~/.fonts.conf, /etc/fonts/local.conf or using your desktop enviroment's utility for font settings.

this is pretty bad...the FF developers would think more in our comfort...something like M$ thought.

Re: why firefox have some terrible fonts?

You do not have to set up AA, it is automatically on in Firefox and bytecode AA is enabled by default in Arch's configs.

Perhaps you could post a screenshot of these hideous fonts? It might make it easier for people to help you out...

Hello, I'm having the same problem.
Firefox is using horrible fonts. I'll post a screenshot ASAP.

Simply compare this two screenshots:

Opera:

FF:

There is a little difference between then...can you see it?

Re: why firefox have some terrible fonts?

mhhh.... ok there IS a difference. but i think this is just font and its size. roll in IE it seems just bigger fonts, and between opera and firefox, opera does give a bit cleaner interface as a whole to me just because of the menubar and locationbar where firefox' fonts are a bit tiny again.
mhh... my suggestion now would be try playing with font settings in your gtk settings (.gtkrc-2.0 for example) or/and firefox itself.
but i really doubt that firefox jsut doesnt use AA, coz it does without modificating anything here (i hope so lol ).

cheers,
detto

If you think IE fonts are nicely anti-aliased, you should go to a vision clinic to repair your eyes.

Re: why firefox have some terrible fonts?

Sometimes i don't understand this... whenever I hear "fonts are ugly" it seems to be the opposite of what the last person said... your IE fonts are not AA.  If you want firefox to look jagged and choppy too, turn of font AA.

Those fonts are disgusting and jagged.

This is what it should look like:

These two are almost identical.  The only difference is subtle and in the ads on top and bottom of the post.
For the record though, I use a different default font setup in firefox.... here's a similar shot to above:

Re: why firefox have some terrible fonts?

Weird thread... it seems that you dislike anti-aliasing (don't understand why wink). Well, then disable it? Or only enable it for certain font sizes (e.g. anything over 10pt), which is a good idea, because small fonts get blurred too much otherwise.

Btw, the typeface in Opera and Firefox in your screenshots is almost identical... don't know what you don't like about it in FF.

If you have a scroll button on your mouse (likely) then hold down ctrl button on keyboard and scroll it down.
Default fonts and size used in Firefox are redily accessible via preferences- I don't think you need much explanation on that one...
