Hi this is my first attempt at installing Arch, but I am not new to linux. I have completed a fresh install and everything went well until I tried to install and start X.
I installed the Nvidia driver via pacman and it's loaded up fine:
pacman -S nvidia-340xx$ nvidia-smi

+-------------------------------+----------------------+----------------------+I initially tried to get X going with lightdm and i3-gaps by installing by issuing the following commands:
$ sudo pacman -S i3-gaps dmenu xorg xorg-xinit lightdm
$ systemctl start lightdmThis resulted in a black screen.
I spent some time troubleshooting lightdm and a few other display managers, but had no luck and decided to remove everything and just try to run X with nothing else.
After removing the display managers and i3 I also installed the xorg-server package.
In this bare configuration I can run xinit or startx and it results in a black screen and my monitor goes to sleep. I cannot crtl-alt-Fx to different vts. I have also tried plugging my monitor into different output on my GPU in case it is running on a different output but nothing happens.
By going in via ssh I can use ps to find the X process and kill it which brings the monitor back on and I am back to the command prompt.
I'm kind of frustrated because I have read every guide that I can find to get this working and they all say some variation of "install driver > pacman -S xorg xorg-xinit > startx > it just werks"
Here is the contents of Xorg.0.log after running the startx/xinit command. I have not found anything from searching around the minimal warnings in there that seem relevant.

Try removing the config: nvidia-xconfig generally just breaks things.

Thanks for your reply but please clarify. By "try removing the config" do you mean "delete the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf"?
Offline
Yes; delete or move.
If you need specific configs, you can write conf files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
Offline
Ok I moved the file but get the same behavior as before (monitor goes to sleep and I need to kill X process via ssh). Here is the Xorg.0.log
It seems to load the nvidia driver but also tries to load nouveau and vesa now too? Please forgive my ignorance I have very little understanding of how xorg works.

Thanks for the clue, I have it working now!!!
I didn't quite understand what you meant at first but I did a little digging. I will explain how I fixed the problem for anyone who is having similar problems.
I created a "snippet" conf file based on modified the device entry from the xorg.conf which was generated by nvidia-xconfig (this file is no longer used as I have now deleted it but I used part of it as a template for my snippet).
First I determined the PCI Bus ID of the GPU which my monitor is actually connected to by using:
nvidia-xconfig --query-gpu-infoYou can get this also by using lspci or nvidia-smi but I found the output from the above command easier to use.
Next created a file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/gpu1.conf and added the following adding in the bus id:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device1"
Driver "nvidia"
BusID "PCI:6:0:0"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
EndSectionThen simply ran xinit and there we go.
