Hi,
I'm not sure but you could use passwd to set a root password and then login in a tty.

as soon as you press enter after typing root as user, it gives authentication failure

I used other computer (uefi) to test arch, and worked as intended(alt+right or alt+f2 =automatic login), maybe it was something to do with that specific old pc (it also has trouble to run lightdm and only has BIOS).

I'm waiting to have another opportunity to test this issue further.
