fn keys for adjusting screen brightness don't work in GDM

In GDM, before logging in, the fn keys for adjusting screen brightness of my Dell XPS 9360 don't work.
They start working just after login, when the gnome session has started.
Is it a common issue with GDM or is it related to my laptop model only? Is there a fix / workaround?
Thanks!

Have you tried GDM instead?

The ArchWiki has a page dedicated to backlight problems, check it out.

Thanks for your reply! Actually I'm using GDM (not lightdm as previously stated; my mistake)
BTW I've looked at the archwiki pages (both GDM and backlight) but I could find any solutions for me...
