Every time I open a terminal emulator (st/kitty) from my home directory, i3 keybind or dmenu, some of the glyphs for the powerlevel9k zsh's theme are not rendered properly. When I cd into a different directory and open a terminal from there it has no issues rendering the all the fonts. I made sure my locale and env variables are properly set to en_US.UTF-8. The terminal emulator I've been using is urxvt, which does not have the same problem, but I'm looking to change to a term emulator with better Unicode support.
What could be the problem? I'm sorry if it's a dumb question, but I've tried googling but nothing comes up.

I assume the cd is less relevant than starting the second shell from an interacive shell because you likely alter some LC vars in your zshrc (or sth. else sourced by that but not /bin/sh)
localectl
locale -a
locale # this one from a working and a broken terminalAlso some screenshots to illustrate the issue (only post thumbnails or links, ensure it's a png w/o compression artifacts) might be helpful.

Thanks for the help. This happens every time I open a terminal from the $HOME directory, even when I start from the second shell. It only works when I cd into another directory and start a shell from there.
localectl

Edit: Just realized I'm using Antergos on this PC, though I don't think it makes much of a difference. Sucks because I'm not gonna get help from them since the project is closed. Sorry everyone. Feel free to close this thread.

only post thumbnails or links
It looks more like the PS1 is different
echo $PS1
echo $PS1 | od -xAlso c&p the actual text of the prompt to see whether it's different unicode points.
Do you have OMZ installed?

Sorry, I just fixed the images. And yes, OMZ is installed.
echo $PS1 has the same output:
%f%b%k$(build_left_prompt)echo $PS1 | od -x also has the same output:
0000000 6625 6225 6b25 2824 7562 6c69 5f64 656c
0000020 7466 705f 6f72 706d 2974 000a
0000033I just c&p on my text editor the text and they are indeed the same characters.

Do they display correctly if you paste them outside the prompt?
Drop OMZ it's likely the cause. If you only care about powerline: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Powerline#Zsh

I uninstalled OMZ but it's still not working properly. Perhaps it must be something to do with the theme itself. I'm going to open an issue on their github.
Thank you so much for the help. I really love how helpful the community is.
